Reviews & Discussion

Review by indyknife Apr 17, 2012
Crystal Castles' first album was the anthem of many drunken dance parties in the summer of 2008 and helped solidify electronica as a huge part of my existence. Their second album, although very different, is just as much a masterpiece as the first. Despite what others say, I think CC has a highly unique sound. Did they invent a new genre? NO they fucking didn't. Do I live under a rock and haven't heard other electronic music? NO I've heard A LOT. This shit is amazing. Its beautifully melodic, and deeply emotional.

There's a lot to say here, so I'll try to keep it short and get the obvious outta the way:
I don't mind sampling, everyone does it, but they were so snotty about the way they did it. Sampling an underground chiptune producer, and then having the balls to say "We get sounds no one else does." in interviews. Really, guys?! I mean, thats rotten to begin with, but also, it's not like CC sounds unique AT ALL. This is simply modern synthpop. No reason to pretend you're fucking innovators, guys. We've heard all these sounds and beats a billion times before. (Honestly, their beats are insanely boring and lifeless).

Also, their image (which is a huuuuge part of who they are) is fucking irritating and pretentious. Too cool for school. Reel it in a bit, you two. I mean, you make it REALLY obvious that you're trying REALLY hard to look cool when every pic taken of you has you looking unhappy and out-of-it with a whiskey bottle in your hand and a cig in your mouth... ON STAGE.
WE GET IT ALREADY! You're trying to look like you rock and don't give a fuck. But this shit doesn't rock and you clearly do give a fuck based on how hard you try.

But girls love to wiggle around to this stuff, so I can see why they were so popular amongst college kids.
