Reviews & Discussion

Review by i.am.fudd. Nov 12, 2007
David West is climbing up the ranks as one of dance music's most feared & respected deejays/producers. Whether on his own, or working with others, his productions have the qualities that can withstand the test of time.

Of his co-producer guises, the most famous are Anti-Loop, Synergy, Audioholics, & David West vs. Inkfish. Mr. Westerlund has enjoyed just as much success with these aliases as he has producing & remixing on his own.

He continues to lead the charge in the evolution of EDM. Whether you're a fan of his releases or an avid listener of his monthly radio show, Go West - which is streamed every first Wednesday of the month on DI.FM, you already know about one of the best kept secrets in the EDM world.

Help spread the gospel!

Westy has truly changed since his Antiloop days, which I for one, think is a good thing. He has made more than just an attempt of going down the route of Progressive. Dave made a particularly impressive debut on the AnjunaDeep label with his ear-catching "Larry Mountains 54", combining elements of Progressive Trance with Progressive (and also Deep) House. But I'd have to say my favourite song by him right now is "Suffering Island". It well and truly lives up to it's name with it's melancholic sound. I believe you need to hear the full version to understand the impact it gives on the listener. Sample extracts just don't do it justice! As is the case with basically everything David West makes nowadays. A truly remarkable talent who should be well-remembered in the history of Trance and indeed, Dance music as a whole.

David West is a highly talented all-round producer. His individual and collaborative productions, as well as his remixes, are always highly sophisticated, immaculately constructed works of art. Whilst many of his productions lean towards progressive trance in terms of style, West’s exceptional versatility has led to him applying his sounds to more orthodox trance as well as housier material. From an extensive discography, personal favourites with regards to individual and collaborative productions include recent release ‘Suffering Island’, with its insistent grooves, driving percussion and complex sound layers, and ‘Larry Mountains 54’ (featuring Andreas Hermansson), a housier number with a bassline that morphs from a deep churner into a catchier funk-influenced foundation. As far as his remixes go, his reinterpretation of Dominic Plaza’s ‘Sounds Rushing’ is something of a progressive masterpiece, underpinned by a heavy groove and enriched by a cornucopia of sounds, including stutter vocals, airy atmospheres, heavy drums, glistening keys and sparky synth stabs. One of the very best producers around within the realms of trance at the moment, progressive or otherwise.
