Reviews & Discussion

Deadly Threat (nee C. Llyod Brown) b. 1969, Los Angeles Calif.
Not too long ago, pianist Horace Silver was dubbed "the hard bop grandpop" by a random on-air personality. In this fashion, I've come to dub Threat as "the sage of S. Central".
Threat was first heard AND FELT on "Color Blind" from Ice Cube's 1991 Priority Records release, "Death Certificate". This was proceeded by a guest appearance on Yo-Yo's sophomore lp, "Black Pearl". But Threat really struck gold when he teamed up with fellow West Coast comrad 2Pac on "Peep Game", from 'Pac's 92 Interscope release, "Strictly 4 my...".

little known fact: 2Pac, Threat, and producer Bobby "Bobcat" Ervin formed the group "Microphone Mafia" in 1992.

Riding on the success of his Ice Cube and 2Pac appearances, Threat released his debut LP ("Sickinnahead") on DJ Pooh's short-lived partnership with Mercury Records, Da Bomb. The first single "Let the Dog's Loose" had a dope video, full of footage of Threat running from the police through 40's hood, but the follow-up ("Shutaf..up") is the song that still rings in my head to this day.

Highlights from this album are "Bust One Fa Me", "Give It Up", and "The Whore Said it Yours" (among the many others).

Update status: I saw Threat perform not too long ago in Hollywood (w/ Fat Lip of the Pharcyde as the opener) and his most recent material is even iller than the stuff from before, so stay tuned ....
