In 1991 Grutle Kjellson and Ivar Bjørnson grew tired of their band Phobia and wanted to start something new. Ivar's childhood friend Trym Torson soon joined the band as drummer and now that the band was complete, they started working on songs. But there was a problem: what to call the band? The band went to a live show where Old Funeral played, and Demonaz was with them at that time: his first suggestion was 'Enslaved' (inspired from their song "Enslaved in Rot" from the Immortal demo tape) and that was what the band chose and kept...
After 6 months of constant rehearsing, the band produced a two track demo, which was a mixture of Black, Death and some synth parts. But it was awful so they decided not to release it. A year later, they entered the studio again and produced a five track demo. This time it had the right sound and it was named "Yggdrasill" (taken from Northern mythology). The demo was, of course, great, and got them a deal with the legendary record label "Deathlike Silence Productions". Today the original demo is unobtainable, but it was later re-released on a split with Satyricon. Later, a guy from England called Euronymous of DSP and asked for two extreme norwegian bands, as he was starting his own label called Candlelight Records. Enslaved and Emperor were the ones Euronymous mentioned. All this led to the release of the split, "Hordanes Land/Emperor".
It was now time to record the full-length debut. It was recorded in Grieghallen, and named "Vikingligr Veldi". Legendary Pytten produced it, and Hellhammer from Mayhem helped with the drums. It was supposed to be released on DSP but that never happened (The death of Euronymous), but Voices of Wonder (DSP partner) helped releasing the album in 1994. But problems appeared and it is not produced anymore today. But Enslaved and V.o.W might work together on this in the future.
French Osmose Productions noticed their talent and offered them a record deal. Once again they entered Grieghallen and recorded and released the album "Frost" in 1994. This album helped crafting the genre known as Viking Metal. Later, the band joined a tour called "The Winter War Tour", with Marduk in 1995.
Trym left the band and joined Emperor. Harald Helgeson took over the drums. With the new drummer they recorded the album, "Eld", which was released in 1997. After "Eld" was released the new drummer also left the band, but Enslaved found replacement. Dirge Rep (Gehenna) replaced the drummer, and guitarist R. Kronheim was recruited as sessions members. This led to the release of "Blodhemn" in 1998. It was followed by "Mardraum - Beyond the Within" in 2000.
In 2001 the seventh release "Monumension" was recorded and released. It was followed by "Below the Lights" which was released in 2003.
