Sometimes is difficult to imagine how far can go the extension of the frontiers of the electronic music scene, how many places can it reach around the globe. What are the limits for the spreading of the quality sound waves? Who can imagine how far can it go, how many life can it change forever? Even the most isolated lands were exposed to the sonorities charged with special contents, one time or another. Many miles from wherever you are is the land of Arnvidur Snorrason, located on the extreme north of Europe, most precisely Iceland. His influences, though, came from far, far away: “to name a few, I would mention
Jeff Mills,
Robert Hood and the
Basic Channel of the duo
Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus”, he claims very honestly.
Extremely connected to the electronic environment,
Exos, whose philosophy was meant to represent a kind of “Undefined Flexible” line of production, absorbed very early the influences of the Detroit Techno productions. “Their sound floated around the world with massive influences. A huge ground for their music was elaborated in Europe, but not in the U.S. like with most Jazz producers. The thing is that the Detroit members held up a strong connection society, and that might be the reason for their spectacular consolidation”, he confessed, very addicted to their philosophy.
During the winter of 1998,
Exos adventured on the realm of the deep-minimal-dub-atmospheric techno production. “Strange, one day I woke up as
Exos”, he claimed, referring to his main alias. Inspired, he conceived a very sophisticated tune that matched perfectly on these perspectives with analogue equipments such as Nord Modular and ESI EMU 4000 Sampler. The tunes main ideas were ‘coolness’ and ‘protection’, and it was specially dedicated to the author’s father. Arnvidur called the tune “Svali”, a name that signified coolness in his native language – but it was switched to “Maya” later.
This EP, released originally by
Thor’s
Thule label from Iceland, was named “
Exos” by the stores salesmen, but the
Thule gang (from
Thor’s icelandic techno label) decided it would be named “Yellow Yard”.
Thor had a huge influence on Arnvidur Snorrason’s life. Through their friendship,
Exos could learn a lot and grow up as a professional. A while later, it called the attention of the germans from the respected Force Inc. Music Works label: “Thor’s girlfriend gave me a call when I got my new date. It almost blew me”, tells Exos, remembering that he was driving when he was informed about the german’s interest. “She told me that she got
Force Inc. Music Works on the other line”. In 1999, the recently released twelve inch didn’t have a name, but the stores baptized it the name of the A1 track ("Yellow Yard"). While “Grow” and “Yellow Yard” are more fierce-minimal techno driven, “Maya” is a chef d’ oeuvre based on brilliant deep techno full of hypnotic timbres and synthesizers pads on the drop out; “Communications” seems to be the perfect equation between the atmospheric and the dancefloor, the elegant-made and the groovy.
Exos has been spinning at clubs in countries like Slovakia, France, Holland and Germany, and playing with fellows such as
Dave Clarke,
Adam Beyer,
Monika Kruse and
Marco Carola. More recently, the icelandic techno wiz came up with his label called "Do Not Sleep" through where he is planning to release several tunes of his own and other well-known artists. His first release came out recently in the beginning of 2005 featuring the majestic
DJ Rush, a seventeen year old prodigy Kasheii and the owner himself. >>>Underground Front<
