Freemasons, The

Real Name:
Russell Small & James Wiltshire
Profile:
House guise of one half of Phats & Small and his co-producer, James Wiltshire.

Having got together to come up with a new production group, the duo stumbled across Amanda Wilson singing karaoke in a pub. Small said of discovering her: "We were just blown away by her voice... she’s got that soulful thing going on so we approached her and she was really up for it. It took two hours from start to finish once Amanda was on board."
The trio then got together again at the same pub to discuss ideas and came up with the 'Love On My Mind' track that would give them their fame. All that was left was to come up with a name, of which Small states: "The landlord had said if the track got to number one, he'd give us free drinks for life - we immediately shook on it so it seemed only fair to name ourselves after the pub."

Small and Wiltshire also own their own label, which unsurprisingly is called Freemaison.

Reviews & Discussion

Nothing in life is for certain, but the probability of The Freemasons conjuring up a quality, sophisticated slice of warm, uplifting House comes incredibly close indeed. 'Love On My Mind', 'Rain Down Love' and 'Watchin'' are the big hitters, but the duo have another notable string to their bow. Indeed, they're gaining something of a following on the back of their remixes alone, notably an excellent remix of Herd & Fitz's 'I Just Can't Get Enough' and the bouncy, sassy reworkings of Beyonce's 'Deja Vu' and 'Green Light', which shimmied and high-heeled their way effortlessly onto mainstream radio. Furthermore, their sublime 'After Hours' mixes only serve to reinforce this sentiment. So what are you waiting for, submit to their irresistible disco grooves right this minute!

Freemasons are quite extraordinary. They have become one of the most sought-after talents in the House scene and in such a small matter of time. Before 2004, they were unknown almost to the point that you thought they didn't exist. Then BOOM! Almost out of nowhere, tons of remixes were being hammered on the many dancefloors of the United States.

I've recently returned to the saviour of Disco House after a lengthy few months stuck in different genre zones (and artists). Permit me to steal a phrase from Astronica, but Freemasons whet my appetite with "Rain Down Love", the newest teaser of the massive debut album "Shakedown". I can't believe I've been away from the sounds of this magic act for so long! It's high time I rekindled my aural knowlendge of the awesome Freemasons!!

Anybody looking for remixes that can be best described as "modern disco" should bank on the Freemasons. 2005 was a fantastic debut year for them with many American DJs caning the heck out of their mixes for Faith Evans' "Mesmerized". And who can really blame them? Other remixes for the likes of Heather Headley, Angie Stone, Jamiroquai, and Steve Mac are solidifying their rep as a remix team that mainstream US jocks are growing to love. They may not be giving Full Intention a run for their money just yet; but if they can keep up this pace, they'll prove to be worthy competition in the future. Watch this listing for more huge mixes.
