gas is simply the most amazing ambient electronic project ever. it's been years now since i discovered wolfgang's work under his gas alias, and i'm always going back to it. listening to these albums sometimes during days. it's strong, inspirational, spooky, mysterious... pulsating bass rythms like heartbeats ... it's magic!

Wolfgang Voigt is a pretty brilliant guy, and since his discography is so ridiculously huge (hey this dude's got about 30 aliases and probably way over 100 seperate releases with all those vinyl-only singles and albums and collaborations) it can be slightly overwhelming to know where to start with this guy. But here it is, stick with the music he's made under the name Gas for a good introduction. "Pop" is definitely the masterpiece; it's the first thing you should hear (check track 4 (they're all untitled) for the most beautiful thing he's ever done), and unfortunately it's the last thing he's recorded in a very long time (2000). But all of the Gas albums are worth hearing if it turns out that you really like "Pop".

After you soak this stuff up I'd recommend checking out his Studio 1 alias- specifically the compilation that collects all the singles he released (10 songs named after colors) called "Studio Eins" which is pretty damn amazing. He also has a compilation under the name M:I:5 called "Maßstab 1:5" which is another great collection worth checking out.

Of all of Mr. Voigt's aliases, GAS is by far and away the most breathtaking.
He has proven that beauty can be found in repetition, and isn't shy about seamlessly recording the same song dozens of times. While each of his four albums has unique qualities that set them apart from one another, the sheer lack of pretentiousness in style are their most enduring qualities. Subtle shifts in texture are reminiscent of light filtering through stained glass at various times of the day. His heavy 4/4 rhythms tie the multiple orchestral string loops together with pristine grace, while subtle clicks and vinyl-sample pops make for even richer listening. I am totally addicted to GAS and consider Voigt a necessity. He is by far and away one of the best and most prolific electronic music producers alive. Check "Pop" and the 2nd track on "Konigsforst" for an example of his absolute genius. Consistency and familiarity never sounded so heavenly.
