Reviews & Discussion

Review by Dec 16, 2006 (edited over 5 years ago)
If you like cut-up classical music, GM sound sets, and lots of arpeggiators, then I suggest you'll like the Gasman. Otherwise you might want to look elsewhere. His music lies somewhere between a haunted 19th century ballroom and an early 90s rave.

While some of his tracks do get a bit... yawnsome, it's hard to resist ones like "Derbac" (from Remedial) or "Electric Coconut" (from Grand Electric Palace of Variety), which are very thoughtfully put together and stand up to repeated listens.

The Gasman is a promising artist, all things considered. Though he does fall into the unfortunately boring 'melodic idm' territory, he has more in common with The Black Dog or early Plaid with his use of melodic phrases, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the 'no key change' style of idm. However promising he is, The Gasman is unfortunately very hit and miss, and seems to have no quality control. While most albums seems to have a number of tracks that please me, it is always marred by what seem like lazy ideas coupled with lazy production work. It's my hope he brings his melodic strength forward more, and works harder on his use of sounds and their sequencing. With more attention to subtle sonic detail and sound sculpting, he could be an even more unique artist.

Quite simply sublime and inventive. Spanning and creating a wide range of previously unexplored atmospheric environments. Both haunting at times and blissful at others. I would have to argue that this artist is simply unclassifiable and therefore everyone should put any one of the albums on at home and open your mind to something different. I cannot vouch for owning all of the artists work to date, but the majority of which I have heard is really good. I like this persons' music alot.
