In the right place at the right time: in 1994, Gunjah makes his first serious performance in the legendary Base in Dresden. The techno club, in the Neustadt section of Dresden, is THE place to go in the mid-90s for electronic sound checkers, in addition to the Fabrik and the Musikfabrik in Pirna. And it is Gunjah's gateway drug. In 1997, he was already performing in the E-Werk in Berlin shortly before it closed, i.e. just in time to make a name for himself beyond the borders of Saxony. The number of bookings increases. First clubs, then festivals, then road tours. At this time, at the latest, he can be found on the road more and more often.
Since there is not exactly a huge number of performances at the beginning, his free time has to be cleverly organized to get money as easily as possible; money that he needs for records. For living. For this reason, Gunjah, together with his pal Lexy, opens the 'Cocoon' record store in Dresden in 1997. Not a bad idea. However, a poor knowledge of business economics leads to their store crash-landing just about a year later. Gunjah's ambitions in terms of clubs bears significantly better-tasting fruit. In 1998, he starts with Tweakers , a techno club that by and large corresponds to the continuation of Gunjah's personal background. But his musical spectrum is changing. Parallel to Tweakers , therefore, Studio 43 starts up in spring 1999; this was a violent breakaway from the stereotypes and regulated values of the club landscape in Dresden at the time. In order to prevent the ultimate idea of partying of Studio 43 from completely going to the dogs, the techno-based Tweakers is refined into the Showboxx after the termination of the semi-legal Location in Neustadt. Showboxx is large enough, official enough and - pretty soon - seedy enough to regularly attract greats from the electronic sector such as xx, xx or even xx to Dresden and to keep alive the dirty-frivolous partying, including 'Total Customer Satisfaction' a.k.a. 'Spirit of Studio 43'. This is followed in 2001 by the Funkwelt , with the latest trends in electronic music, which can be heard on the Neo-Pop samplers II & III, and by the Level , which opened in the Kurland Palace in October 2004: here, in the steeped-in-history ex-Jazztonne, all the electronic spirits that didn't fit into Gunjah's other clubs made their appearances.
The most accurate description of the essence of his personal work, whether as a DJ, producer, remixer, club manager or booker, is surely "freestyle". A quality characteristic that Gunjah keeps highlighting to this day and an absolute must if someone - like him - is intent on moving and promoting something, especially himself.
This young man has experienced a lot; you can't tell by looking at him, but you can hear it. Electronics meets all the nice things that make a party danceable. And, despite the Dresden Cocoon affair, his old partner in crime Lexy is once again at Gunjah's side; calling themselves MONSTER, they are just now starting their tour through Germany - the first MONSTER release, 'Viva La Lalala (2004, Ghetto Charge)' is already in the sack. Any questions? Good. Enjoy your flight!
