On December 25th, 1995, Hailie Jade Scott was born to rap superstar Eminem (Marshall Bruce Mathers III), and his then girlfriend (and later wife) Kimberley Anne Scott. Hailie’s first musical appearance was on '97' Bonnie & Clyde' at age two, a track on her father's 1998 recording, 'The Slim Shady LP'. Eminem had told Kim that he had taken Hailie to Chuck E. Cheese, when he had really taken her to the studio to record her vocals for the song--which is about the two of them dumping Kim's dead body in a lake. The song was written because Em was feeling frustrated with Kim—she was keeping Hailie from him and his daughter was “being used as a weapon against me”, he said. To get back at her, he wrote the song. It re-appeared slightly altered on his 1999 album 'The Slim Shady LP' with a new title, '97 Bonnie & Clyde'.
While her dad is in the studio, Hailie colours and plays video games. One studio session, she ran around yelling, "Somebody please help him! I think my daddy's gone craaaaazah!" Eminem got Hailie to say it on the microphone, and her comment was reprised on 'My Dad's Gone Crazy' from his 2002 album 'The Eminem Show'. Hailie also sings on the chorus and performs an outro.
In 2003, Shady Records released a seven-track mixtape CD that was released free with any Shady Records purchase. On one song, 'Doe Ray Me' (otherwise known as 'Hailie's Revenge' featuring D12, Obie Trice, G-Unit, and 50 Cent), Hailie and Em kick the song off and finish it with a short skit. Hailie says, "Daddy, is Ja Rule taller than me?" Em replies, "No honey. You guys are the same size."
Hailie is the apple of Eminem's eye and everything he has achieved is devoted to her. He has dedicated several of his awards to her, his 'Slim Shady LP' and ‘Marshall Mathers LP’ albums, his book 'Angry Blonde', and she has been tattooed on his arm by name and portrait. He composed 'Hailie's Song' from 'The Eminem Show' to express his feelings for her and on Father's Day 2002, she bought him a special silver ring that says 'DAD'. Hailie is very close to her father and adores him. As fellow Shady Records rapper 50 Cent says it best, "Hailie thinks Em is a superhero."
Hailie grew up in Michigan with her father and mother. As Marshall struggled to keep his jobs, the three would constantly shuffle from place to place, and when her parents’ relationship deteriorated, Hailie often lived in and out of homes with her grandmothers Kathleen (Kim's mother) and Debbie (Marshall's mother). Eventually, Marshall hit the big time and bought a suburban house in Sterling Heights with Hailie and Kim. After trouble with fans and the Sterling Heights council, they moved to a new home in Clinton Township.
Kim and Marshall soon divorced. They settled on legal visitation rights, but the judge ruled that Marshall was entitled joint custody of Hailie, because he had been a significant figure in her life since her birth. Marshall kept his house but shelled out $475, 000 to buy Kim a new one. Not long after the separation, Kim found a new boyfriend by the name of Eric Hartter and became pregnant. In April of 2002, she gave birth to her second daughter and Hailie's new half-sister, Whitney.
Hartter was a fugitive on the run from drugs charges, so Kim moved back into Marshall's home, bringing Hailie and Whitney with her, but also Alaina, Kim's 10-year-old niece. Kim and Marshall reconciled and they lived in his Clinton Township home with the three girls and Marshall's 17-year-old half-brother Nathan. He then upgraded to a bigger six bedroom home in Oakland Township, 20 minutes drive from Detroit, complete with heated marble floors, pond and private tennis courts. Kim and Marshall again split up and they shared custody of Hailie once again. Recently, Marshall was granted temporary full custody of her when Kim went missing for two weeks in Cancun, Mexico, trying to commit suicide. She had been trying to dodge jail time because of previous driving and drug offences. She turned up in court and was sentenced 90-days in jail. Hailie spent a lot of quality time with Em until her mother was released on May 12th.
Hailie attends school with her cousin Alaina at a local Chippewa Valley elementary in a quiet, secluded street, where paparazzi or any other unwanted press would stick out. She watches The Powerpuff Girls, Hey Arnold and Dora The Explorer with dad when he picks her up from school. When Em was filming his debut movie 8 Mile, he invited his seven-year-old co-star Chloe Greenfield (who plays Rabbit's younger sister Lily) over for a slumber party with him and Hailie. They ate tacos and took a trip to the Dairy Queen for ice cream, where Em played an early version of his track 'Say Goodbye Hollywood'. Hailie got on famously with Chloe, and Chloe has loved the both of them since. Hailie and Em are also considering purchasing Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. Em says he can’t stand the Detroit winter and thinks it’s a better place to bring up Hailie.
