Hawkwind

Profile:
Formed in 1969, Hawkwind are a prolific and pioneering space-rock group from the UK. Within weeks of their formation, the band had made a name for themselves on the free festival circuit and would perform live without fee wherever they were able. By the time of their 1971 album X In Search Of Space Hawkwind were infamous for their science fiction themed music and theatrical concerts, the latter renowned as exhibitions of pulsing electronics, dazzling light shows, LSD consumption and (from 1971-75) a nude dancer in the form of Stacia Blake.
Despite a near-constant revolving door of members, Founder member Dave Brock has been the sole mainstay and the core of the band since its inception and has steered the band from its psychedelic rock roots into flirtations with heavy metal, new wave, ambient and techno. Notable contributors have included "accidental" bassist Lemmy (who would go on to greater fame with Motörhead), Cream (2)'s Ginger Baker and science fiction writer Michael Moorcock.

well i rekon i better put my bit in on this band because they absolutley dominated my musical head during the late 80s/ early 90s..
.. i vaguley had heard of them due to hearing silver machine on the radio growing up.. but thanks to a friend who gave me a hotknife one afternoon and stuck on chronicle of the black sword album i was hooked..
.. 1st hit of hash,,, 1st hit of hawkwind..
and u know what.. they were made for each other,,
its easy to see why they make that music , given that they are a bunch of original stoner hippies.. true acid rock pioneers..
and i spent the next half decade searching out thier albums from record fairs.. rushing home and pulling a knife before tripping off into space ..
.. each album is totally unique and each is a trip within a trip.. the early space ritual release is heaving duty acid rock
..in search of space is awesome trippy material.. and doremi is heavy heavy riff material..
.. 70s hawkwind lightens up.. levitation.. quark strangenesss.. excellent rca years stuff with choose your masques..
then 80 more rock oriented stuff... live chronicles.. based of the chronicle of the black sword lp..
.. sweet synth backdrops... throbbing guitar riffs.. abstract and futuristic / mystical lyrics..
this is what u get with hawkwind..
superb.. and still releasing stuff today.. along with the various side projects by individual band members,,..
.. if u smoke and havent heard this band yet.. christ.. where u at man !!!! :-)

I have the Electric Warriors & Space Riders Hawkwind promo's by Dj Freak, not for sale though. I first saw Hawkwind at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 where they played for free and I still love 'em....A band way ahead of its time, imaginative, innovative and inspirational, as well as being completely off their tree. Start with the early output....In Search of Space/Doremi/Space Ritual/Hall of the Mountain Grill/Warrior at the Edge of Time, if you love electronic music/trance you should be hooked by then. Rest of the output to date is equally interesting and far reaching, but some of the 80's output is a bit flat and lacking in stamina in comparison to 70's & 90's Hawkwind. A highly recommended band.

Essential album - 'Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music' for a track called 'The Aubergine That Ate Rangoon'. This track is kind of electronic funk with a psychedelic feel.
As with any long standing band, Hawkwind have released their fair share of rubbish but they are a formative link between UK festival and rave scene. Their influence should not be underestimated as they are also champions of early outdoor free parties ('Stonehenge Decoded' anyone?)

Hawkwind are the masters of psychedelic music, playing deep experimental and outerspace music since the seventies with classics as "roadhawks" to their hights on "electric tepee" and "it is the business of the future to be dangerous" - essential for all psychonauts.
