Holden

Real Name:
James Alexander Goodale Holden
Profile:
UK-based producer who has gained substantial fame for his tireless remixing and his instantly-recognizable ethereal progressive house style with a very apparent attention to detail. He garnered instant fame in 1999 with the release of his first 12", "Horizons / Pacific" on Silver Planet. "Horizons" was licensed to INCredible and became one of the biggest surprise hits of 1999. At the time James was only 19. He has since followed up with a handful of original productions, a slew of highly-regarded remixes, a pair of mix albums, and successful collaborations with Ben Pound and Van Bellen. In 2003, "Horizons" was eclipsed by the runaway popularity of "Nothing" Holden & Thompson and "A Break In The Clouds" (the first release on his own label Border Community). Most recently he released a double-mix CD for the "Balance" series in late 2003.

Reviews & Discussion

Review by TQRBO Oct 09, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
First James Holden was a pure progressive artist. Since 2005 he created a wider vision of music and since that moment I was addicted to his music. There are so many different styles in his sets. Influences of ambient, electro, IDM, (tech)house, techno and many more. But he picks out the right tracks and creates an incredible mysterious, euphoric and dark sphere which gets into your body and your head. Tracks like Lump, the sky was pink & planet 7 are superb. The Border Community label is also excellent. James Holden is always developing and you can say he is the future..

I have two contradicting comments to add to this discography...

Firstly, James Holden is an absolute genius for conceiving two impossibly good tracks, namely "Nothing"
and "I Have Put Out The Light". For me, these two techy monsters touch a part deep inside me that few grooves do. Both have amazing dirty, grinding, erotic basslines and powerful melodies.

Unfortunately I must also add that I don't like the direction Holden is taking these days. He seems to have lost his knack for techno stormers and instead has become weirder and weirder, musicwise, by the day.

Regardless, said tracks will forever remain priceless gems in my collection...

Another very gifted talent in the art of making music however his djing skills doesnt come anywhere near the magic he can put out when producing. He is notorious of trainwrecking time after time, perhaps that is the reason why his Essential Mix of 2002 was pre-recorded on a laptop. Altho it should just be a matter of time before he has mastered the knowledge of a good mix because without exaggregating, he seems to be one of the most musically gifted people around.
