JXL

Real Name:
Tom Holkenborg
Profile:
The Amsterdam based live-act Junkie XL started in 1995 and debuted in 1997 with their album Saturday Teenage Kick. Actually, Junkie XL is not a real band, but more a one-man-show by Tom Holkenborg, born on December 8th 1967 in Lichtenvoorde (The Netherlands). Junkie XL's music is a mix of rock and big beats, often compared with the sound of The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers. The power of this music is absolutely best expressed in a live performance. Junkie XL is one of the first bands that plays modern electronic music and combines it with a good live show.

Junkie XL's music is a mixture of styles; alternative dance with a rock-attitude. The real Junkie XL-feel is probably in Saturday Teenage Kick: an uptempo hip-hop beat with a groovy guitar and Rudeboy behind the mic.

Tom uses the nickname Junkie XL because he's usually described as "studio-junkie" and XL comes from "eXpanding Limits", because Tom is always expanding the limits of music, space, time and EVERYTHING! And I think, he couldn't choose a more appropriate alias - he surely CAN and DOES push the limits of everything.

To me, Junkie XL is the best and the most outstanding producer ever! It is just amazing how many instruments this guy can play and how many music styles he can produce, ranging from raw big beat (first two albums) to beautiful downtempo ("Between These Walls", "Broken" on "Radio JXL 3pm"; "Talk Tonight" and "Streets" on "Radio JXL 7am"), from dub ("Dubzilla" on "Radio JXL 3am"; "Tommy Dub" on "Radio JXL 7am") to lush ambient IDM-ish landscapes ("Chilled", "Casio" and "Reshurc" on "Radio JXL 3am"), from radio pop ("that Elvis remix"; most of the tracks on "Radio JXL 3pm") to progressive trance (most of his latest remixes; most of the tracks on "Radio JXL 3am" and "Radio JXL 7am"). Furthermore - whatever he produces oozes utter perfection because he pays a lot of attention to each and every detail in each and every one of his tracks. He's surely one of the best trance producers ever - his music is really emotional and atmospheric. Almost each and every one of his remixes is worth checking out (except for those Britney remixes - what was he thinking?)... I must say, Junkie XL is the #1 artist for me - his discography can offer music for each and every mood and any occasion, be it clubbing, chilling out or whatever. Tom is surely a genius.

Without a doubt one of the best electronic producers of recent years, as well as engineering sasha's incredible 'Airdrawndagger' album, he also released his own album, and has done remixes for the likes of Sarah McLachlan, BT, Infusion, and ofcourse Elvis.

He's great live too, a true showman.

"A Little Less Coversation" is going to shift some units, and JXL is going to end up with a big pile of cash. Which is thoroughly deserved, if you asked me, because he is an excellent producer. Well, he must be if he's good enough to work with Sasha. Pumpin' without the cheese - impressive.
