Reviews & Discussion

Review by visual_stereo_ed Jul 30, 2001 (edited over 10 years ago)
Kosheen are a very healthy outfit and are important representatives for the Drum n Bass scene. The producers Decoder and Substance are respected creators in their own right, especially in the more underground scene. However, Kosheen are (with the added presence of Sian as their vocalist) a superb live act.

Having chart success for their latest releases they have some influence on how non-DnB headz perceive Jungle Drum n Bass, in many ways they echo the Reprazent and Breakbeat Era side of Drum n Bass, skirting round the mainstream/underground side of things.
It is now becoming more and more common to have remixes by non-DnB crews.

Their sounds are solid soulful drum n bass with a slight hint at feel good nastiness, bouncy dancefloor sounds over crafted lyrics from a non traditional soul background. On this tip very similar to the Breakbeat Era, usually vocal content in breakbeat music has that house-soul-RnB flavour, instead it keeps to being more angsty a bit more vulnerable but beautiful just check out their massive "HIDE U", if that can't seduce you I don't know what can?

I used to listen to so much alternative where the songs had such good content, songs with great meaning. The Smiths and late punk, but you can realise that alternative is so less sucessful now. What on earth have bands like Feeder and Blink 182 got to offer? Angst is not confined to alternative and guitars. Honestly I feel that the sounds of the drum n bass added, especially in SONGS as good as "SLIP N SLIDE (SUICIDE)" offer more to the average delinquent indie kid than flippin' Limp Bizkit!!
but thats my own personal opinion!
