Techno starts with a K,and all other genres after 1980.Kraftwerk.Sheer brilliance , the more i have listened to them over the years the better they sound.I first heard them in the early 1980s.I really took notice though when i heard their Autobahn lp,given to me 15 years after its release.At the time i was listening to techno and house, and immediately heard the roots after playing Autobahn.Then i read some sleeve notes from a comp album which told of there influences ,the interviewed people then changed my outlook on music forever.

Kraftwerk are usually characterized as the Beatles of electronica,well Kraftwerk were more important than Beatles!Most people believe that Kraftwerk were the first electronic group,that's not true but they were the most popular and did some innovations such as the first drum machines and they first used sequencers.The hits Telstar(tornados),Dr.Who(ron grainer),Popcorn (Gershon Kingsley and the remake by hot butter)are some tracks that predated Kraftwerk's electronical period.But if it wasn't for them electronica and other kind of music such as italo disco,hip hop would be different.In my opinion after listening to their last album tour de france soundtracks they should better live in silence if they don't have anything important to record because in this way they will destroy the path that they built in the 70's and the 80's.

It's very difficult to try and capture the essence of Kraftwerk in so many words, but there is no doubt that they are the most influential "band" since the Beatles. Many artists have sold more records and enjoyed greater commercial success, but after nearly 40 years since Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider-Esleben met in Dusseldorf, their artistic vision has flowered to such a great extent that it is very difficult and probably impossible to imagine the current state of electronic music without them.

Kraftwerk's brilliance has been to marry avant-garde electronic concepts that had been furthered by such European luminaries as Stockhausen and Schaeffer, to an outright pop sensibility that stemmed from their love of the AngloAmerican influence of The Beach Boys and The Stooges. Their dogged determination was influenced no doubt by the "Year Zero" climate that exisited within Germanic artistic culture at the time, but Kraftwerk were different to contemporaries such as Can, Tangerine Dream and Neu! in that whilst exploring new sonic possibilities, from "Autobahn" onwards they enchanted their music with a romantic vision of the past, albeit celebrating technology, which in itself is forward-looking, thus becoming "retrofuturist". The "Mensch Maschine" concept, detailing man's interaction with technology is prevalent throughout their work from 1974 onwards, culminating with their most recent album "Tour De France Soundtracks".

Musical change often comes from a clash of dynamics, and none was more explosive than the appearance of "Trans Europe Express" in New York in 1977, as Kraftwerk's sharp, metallic sound transformed both disco and hiphop dramatically. It is one of popular music's most endearing ironies that a band so white as Kraftwerk would end up being deeply influential to many black American musicians.

The german word "Gesamtkunstwerk" or "Total Art" best depicts Kraftwerk; in that everything they do is artistic - from their live shows, their album covers, even their interviews - and it is another facet of them that is so endearing that in an age that Kraftwerk predicted (see Computer World), an age when information on anyone is available at the touch of a button, that they are probably the most mythological of all bands.

We are now reaching a peculiar period in electronic dance music - where nostalgia has kicked in, and some of us older fans yearn for times and sounds of the past. Kraftwerk provide that nostalgia, but yet suffuse it with absolute clarity, knowledge and the philosophy that like a bicycle, if you stop, you fall off.

They invented the next 100 centuries at least, still remain emotional never lacking a human component in their work. The way things turned out with 'Terminator', Kraftwerk already showed a brighter side of the future believing life with machines to be a friendly experience. Call them naive but it's their optimism they shared with technology - a virtue most people still lack enormously, causing its countless misinterpretations or extremes today... be it pop music, politics or economy.
