Reviews & Discussion

Review by Jarren Nov 19, 2007
Ladytron are a band that started off as an almost "novelty" to listeners. It was the new millenium, and here was this new band that sounded like it was 1981. John Peel played Playgirl on his show, and it sounded fresh. Not just for hip teenagers, but also for the 30-somethings who remembered Visage, The Human League, Depeche Mode and Soft Cell when they too were brand spanking new.

Flash in the pan? Anything but.

Ladytron went on to prove themselves, not just as gifted songwriters but also as an electronic band that could rock the live circut as well as any traditional rock band can.

They have seen a fair bit of label woe, none of which is their fault. Firstly Telstar went bust, then after signing to Island. Island at first marketed the band well, pouring in cash to fund the excellent videos for the Witching Hour promos but then suddenly all but disowned the band. The single "International Dateline", one of their strongest tracks, was promo released but inexplicably shelved from full release.

In 2007 the band have found a new indie label (So Sweet), much as they started with Invicta all those years ago.

Ladytron are a band full of promise, the best way I can describe their progression is to make a comparison to the aforementioned Depeche Mode. In the space of 3 albums they have went from ice cool retro futurists to a promising fully developed professional band.

The future deserves Ladytron.
