Profile:
This pair of electronic collage artists stands out as innovators in a field noted for innovation. Matmos's Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt have intriguing backgrounds which help explain their brainy, decentered approach to electronica. Daniel is a UC Berkeley graduate student in Renaissance Literature and a longtime radio and club DJ who has collaborated on both film scores and hip hop projects with Louisville musicians Jason Noble (Rachel's) and Jeff Mueller (June of 44). Schmidt manages the conceptual art department of the San Francisco Art Institute and has been making experimental electronic music for many years, as the leader of avant-garde drone outfit X/I and industrial occultists Iao Core, in which he did time with current members of Amber Asylum and Tipsy.

Laptoptronica gone art installation; self-obsessiveness cleverly camouflaged as social commentary, draped in a velvet cape of Ironic Chic whether it's intended or not (the 90's can't be unlearned, seemingly) - against all odds, some of it is listenable, but most of it is plain average. So do we need them? Does Björk? Does humour belong in musick? Whatever the answers, a novelty group is a novelty group is a novelty group. Matmos are clever, but contrived. Will be vaguely remembered as one of the many "mainstream fringe" phenomenas that made the supposedly controversial appear decidedly uninvolving.

Amazing electronica from San Francisco's wonder duo. The concept itself (an album based around samples of surgical sounds) is pretty great, but the album would be a rewarding listen even if you didn't know about it. Matmos has lately been incorporating live instrumentation into their music (especially in the excellent West e.p.) and continues to do so here. This is intricate, intelligent music that stimulates your mind so much, you might not realize you've gotten off of your futon and started dancing like you're on six hits of ecstacy. However, there is also a beautifully sad song made by playing the bars of a dearly-departed pet rat's cage with a violin bow, among other cage-related sounds. Brilliant, immersive stuff.
