Mick Karn

Real Name:
Anthony Michelides
Profile:
24 July 1958 - 4 January 2011

Mick Karn was an all round artist. He met Japan's members in an art school where he was student.

Inside and outside Japan, he developed an original crawling bass sound instanly recognizable played on fretless basses. He also played clarinet and saxophone.

After Japan he went in on experimentations, between ambient music and jazz in collaboration with great musicians and Japan members.

His first solo album and the Dalis Car collaboration give the best idea of his style on bass.

Greatest bass player of all time, hands down. My biggest inspiration in the world and one of the most underrated musicians of his time.
It's a shame he didn't make enough money out of his music. If someone deserved it, it was Mick. Humble, friendly and always postive, even though he has been through a lot of tough times. Still, he was pretty much loved by everyone he has ever worked with.

If I only had ten percent of his talent... and his humanity.

Been a fan of Japan and Mick Karn since the mid '80's. So very saddened to hear of his passing. He was an enigmatic and creative artist and played the bass like no other. He will be greatly missed. RIP Mick, you will not be forgotten.

Just discovered his works today, and was very bummed (sad) that he passed away just 6 days ago.

The man that made the fretless bass talk. RIP 24 July 1958 - 4 January 2011
