Midnight Choir

Midnight Choir

Real Name:
Paal Flaata, Ron Olsen, Atle Bystrøm (a.k.a Al DeLoner)
Profile:
Norwegian soft-rock band founded in summer 1992 By Paal Flaata and the two brothers Atle Bystrøm and Ron Olsen. Their first original name was Hashbrowns, but when Lasse Hafreager discovered the band in 1993, he urged them to change the name. They landed on the name 'Midnight Choir' Taken from the Leonard Cohen song: Bird On The Wire.
They recorded their first selftitled album in Texas 1994, heavily influenced to american roots music. In 1996 they met The Walkabout's front man Chris Eckman. And they managed to get him to produce their following albums. Eckman wanted to develop the band into more darker and orchestrated sound which he manage to do. The band never got serious attention until 'Amsterdam Stranded' was released in 1998, their most selling album in their career. However as the band got further recognition in Norway and Europe, they parted ways in the beginning of 2004 after two more albums to pursue other projects. They released five albums and one Best-of cd during their lifetime. They remain Norway's definite unsung heroes of the recent times.

Reviews & Discussion

Review by ijustspeak Apr 03, 2006 (edited over 6 years ago)
Tromso city winter 1999(i think). My brother dragged me to see this concert with this unknown band called Midnight Choir. But i had doubts for real but to tell you the truth, it was a fantastic revelation to me as far as Norwegian bands go. There was some feedback problems during the concert but they delivered a stunning and emotional concert that seriously brought my attention to this fantastic band. The concert featured mostly music from 'Amsterdam Stranded', which in my opinion is their best album. Their first 2 albums is very roots inspired but their last 3 albums really showed brilliant compositions that was dark, melancolic and heavy orchestrated, greatly helped by Chris Eckman. It is truly the best and most inspiring band that has walked the norwegian lands. Paal Flaata, the vocalist is indeed one of the most gifted vocalist that has sprung out in this country as well.
If you like The Walkabouts, Nick Cave, Tom Waits and other related artists, you should not miss what these 3 guys managed to put out in their career. Deserves absolute more recognition worldwide than they actually got.
I still play Amsterdam Stranded to this day. A masterpiece.
