Monoton was founded in 1979 by hypermedia wizard Konrad Becker as an art project that underwent various transformations and collaborations in its exploration of psycho-active sound programming and its psychosocial contextualizing. Based on the blank staff lines of an empty sheet of music, the distinct cover design of early records made it into a various exhibitions. In 1998 The Wire magazine singled out Monoton’s record "Monotonprodukt07" from 1982 among the 100 most important records of the 20th century.

Since the late 70's, early 1980's, Monoton and the affiliated project "Institut für wissenschaftliche Sensation" (Institute for Scientific Sensations) have been working on meta-mathematical structures, natural constants and resonance patterns in models of "bionic" psycho-active automat music. Research setups, installations and experiments range from electro-acoustic representations of square roots, powers and periods of n, to explorations of Pi, Fibonacci sequences, Magic Squares and others. Specific audio-software was developed to create psycho-acoustic effects based on frequency following responses and later included audio and VR systems triggered through brain-machine interfaces.

Beyond the available tracks, Monoton was largely performance and installation based, with conceptual environments, site specific events, multi-channel video and multimedia, productions. Over the years a range of various artists joined in the performances and projects.

Starting in 1981 Monoton also conceived music as the soundtrack for more than a dozen video productions of various lengths, like "Monotonprodukt 05", "Mission Monoton", "Trivial TV" and others. Collaboration with Dutch producer Daniel Leeflang started with the remix of a track from "Monotonprodukt 02" for the media production "Synsation". A series of joint live performances for raves and also for dedicated hypermedia productions from 1992 to 1994 resulted in several dance oriented releases.

A pioneer in experimental electronic music, Becker continued to break new ground in electronic media. In 1994 he co-founded the Institute for New Culture Technologies/ t0, and became Director of Public Netbase, a legendary center for digital communication culture. An initiator of World-Information.Org, a cultural intelligence provider, he continues to be active as artist, researcher, writer, interdisciplinary event designer, organizer and producer. Recent conceptual ventures include the Global-Security-Alliance.Com project.
