Monumentum was formed in Italy 1987 by Roberto Mammarella and Anthony Duman, with the intent to create dark music inspired by the likes of Celtic Frost and Christian Death. A demo was recorded in 1989 (later to be re-released as "Musaeum Hermeticum") which impressed other bands in the metal scene but the band broke up soon afterward. In 1994 Mammarella recruited a new lineup and in 1995 they released "In Absentia Christi" on English label Misanthropy Records, after which the band ceased activity. In 2002, Mammarella resurfaced with a completely new lineup to record the album "Ad Nauseum". Again the band seemingly disappeared. In 2004 Monumentum briefly resumed activity to contribute to the Dead Can Dance tribute CD "The Lotus Eaters" (covering "Windfall") but the band has since disbanded again, however, a compilation of unreleased tracks, cover versions and remixes (entitled "Metastasi") was released in 2004 on Cursed Land.
