"I don’t make music for the masses to dance to, i make music for the small majority that listens."

Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann

Moody-Mystery-Man! For some white folks it can be hard to grasp a sometimes frustrated black man's intention.

Understanding his political points or not, Moodyman is in my opinion one of the masters in experimental yet extremely funky house music.

Gilles Peterson made an absolutely great interview with Moodymann last year on bbc radio. Moodymann sounds like spliffed funny and realistic guy with one clear indention: Making good music his way.

His sound is deep scruffy house with many references to jazz, soul hip-hop and disco.

Besides making music he is also a really great dj. He works with many people and among them are Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite, Norma Jean Bell and Malik Pittman.

I highly recommend listening to Moodymann while smoking weed.

Moodymann IS the real deal in House music and Techno. Kenny Dixon Jr makes it soulful, meaningful and timeless. While never having any sucess in the mainstream, he has had an incredibly successful underground following with some fantastic 12" singles like Black Mahogony and I'm Doing Fine.

His song strutures are incredible with unexpected twists coming in ie taking a portion of 1970's soul music in the middle of a song, and returing back into the main song. There are some nice vocalists on some of his tracks like Amp Fiddler/Amp Dog Knight etc too, if you want to check them out.

Anyone who likes proper non-mainstream House and Techno should check this guy out!

Another level, completely.
The output seems to have slowed but the goods are still the goods, and yes they are more often than not better and have acres more personality and life than most of the other records that claim to be deep.
Live, oh my god. Rick James, Marvin Gaye, and Prince are three figureheads that come to mind in the overall effect. The stageshow reeked of sex with his "bitch" on stage underneath a sheet writhing and darting around. Intensely personal, very spiritual, yet completely get your freak on. An odd territory, which very few people are able to really pull off. What's more is his whole family was present and had a barbeque immediately following the show!
my hero.

Literally obssessed with anything that comes out of kenny dixon jr.'s hands , i am indebted to his 'live' sequencing that pertains to what people sometimes call 'the soulful'. You can dance if u want to... I even forgive him the self-referrential rants here and there... In moodymann's words 'What's happenin'?'
