Moorish Delta 7 is one of the U.K's most influential hip hop acts of the last 10 years. The group had its beginnings in the early 90's performing on local radio shows with DJ Kingston.
Along with fellow Birmingham act MSI Asylum, Moorish delta 7 galvanised the Birmingham music scene both acts producing groundbreaking music videos which acclaimed rotation on the major networks in an era where independent music rarely received major airplay.
Their first double vinyl E.P 'Taking four wicked heads' (1998) was a record which showed the promise of things to come. Hard anthem like beats, with hard kicks and sharp snares (which became their trademark) and street inspired and deep esoteric wordplay.
They then had an hiatus during which they recorded several tracks, included one with the aforementioned group on the 'Experiment Vol. 1' called ‘dark Skies’ which a six minute “posse track” album and another unreleased songs called 'Assassins'(1999) During this time 1998- 2002 they made frequent journeys to the U.S to do recording and toured the U.K and Europe constantly while building up bigger a fan base.
By 2001 their next official release 'The Art of Survival / Silent Screams / Status / No 1 Sound.' was their breakthrough record. The beats were now much well crafted than before, the lyrics more polished but still retaining a gritty-street-political edge. The videos to 'Art of Survival' and 'Silent Screams' showed a side of British Street life that had never really had mass exposure before the Moorish era. Also in a time when independent music was often shunned, the group enjoyed regular airplay across most of the major music television networks.
The album that followed 'The Power and The Glory' (2002) was a very diverse musical outing that listens like a story and again really is a classic. After this release they did more extensive touring for 2 years having another hiatus between 2004-2006.
Their second album 'Life in the City' (2006) had some good moments but was not as consistent as their eelier work.
In 2008 they began working on projects which combine different styles of music with hip hop including folk, notably working artist Seth Lakeman. Once again showing the groundbreaking nature of this group.
