One of the most creative and innovative Swedish death metal bands appeared in 1994 with Mikael Åkerfeldt (guitars/vocals), Peter Lindgren (guitars), Johan De Farfalla (bass) and drummer Anders Nordin. The first album came in 1995 with the title "Orchid". Surprisingly enough this album already brings all the trademarks that Opeth carries still today. Differently from many melodic death metal bands, the group showed a different kind of death metal, with many progressive elements added, plus lots of rich interludes in the songs, creating something really new and different in extreme metal scenario. The same can be said about their 1996's release "Morningrise". At that time the band has begun to gain fame due the long duration of their tracks. After "Morningrise", Johan and Anders are replaced by, respectively, Martin Mendez and Martin Lopez. In 1998 the band released their last studio album for Candlelight/Century Media, which is "My Arms, Your Hearse", in which the progressive and melodic elements are improved.
