Paradise Lost formed in 1988 in Halifax, UK. Along with countrymates Anathema and My Dying Bride they are credited with creating the Doom/Death subgenre, although they have also been partially attributable for pioneering Gothic Metal. Throughout their career the band have confounded fans and critics alike with their perpetual taste for reinvention and experimentation, a desire to work with producers from other musical genres, and an oft-stated refusal to repeat themselves for fear of stagnation. "Lost Paradise" (1990), "Gothic" (1991) and "Shades Of God" (1992) are staples of the Doom/Death genre, but by 1993's "Icon" they were gradually losing the Death Metal influences and instead opting for a more melancholy, slighty goth-influenced (though still Metal) mainstream sound, continuing this trend on the extremely popular (albeit controversial) "Draconian Times" (1995) and "One Second" (1997) then losing almost all metallic ties on albums such as "Host" (1999) and "Believe In Nothing" (2001). Since then they've begun to reverted slightly, with "Symbol Of Life" (2002) the recent "Paradise Lost" (2005) contained a few nods to their mid-period days while their new album "In Requiem" (2007) further continues the band's foray back into heavier metal-orientated material.
