Interesting to note: that way back in 1985 nobody seemed to understood what this man was doing with his Purple Rain tour...the mixing of many of his songs from two albums (1999, and Purple Rain) along with the sideshow of religious, spiritual confusion (the best way I could describe it) which is what shows up later in full affect on "Around The World In A Day". I do believe anyone who owns the VHS copy of that 1985 tour would completely understand what Prince was trying to do with it better today than back in 1985...at the time, most critics viewed Prince's 1985 show as pretentious because of the film.

His vision is always seen as a battle (at least back in the eighties...his recent songs show a much more peaceful and balanced Prince) between flesh and spirit...Purple Rain as a whole marked a theatrical move for Prince...inspiring himself to write straight from the heart, and communicate all of his deepest darkest thoughts, something he may not do so well when he is not writing.

Because of the fact that nobody seemed to get where Prince was coming from at the time (Prince was just way too intelligent and ahead of the times for his peers) He refused to tour the states for the next five years or so in favor of Europe, the european fans welcomed Prince's eccentricity...and because of this, many european electronic artists were inspired by Prince...you can actually hear samples taken from many of Prince's albums on early rave tracks...Prince had an affect on many whether conscious or not, I would also consider his first band "The Revolution" to have a great impact on the sound of synth-pop, electro-funk, and Detroit techno.

Prince was untouchable in the 1980s but is widely regarded to be treading water artistically these days. For me, his last flash of brilliance came with the "Lovesexy" album. Since then, his muse seems to have deserted him, along with much of his unique sense of musical courage. The reason for this - who knows? It could be age; some have pointed the finger at his religion (he is now a strict Jehovah's Witness); it could be the "yes men" he surrounds himself with, egging him on to be satisfied with less.

Remember that scene in 'Purple Rain' when the club owner says to Prince "Your music don't mean shit to anyone but yourself"? It wasn't true then - now, I'm not so sure.
