His vision is always seen as a battle (at least back in the eighties...his recent songs show a much more peaceful and balanced Prince) between flesh and spirit...Purple Rain as a whole marked a theatrical move for Prince...inspiring himself to write straight from the heart, and communicate all of his deepest darkest thoughts, something he may not do so well when he is not writing.
Because of the fact that nobody seemed to get where Prince was coming from at the time (Prince was just way too intelligent and ahead of the times for his peers) He refused to tour the states for the next five years or so in favor of Europe, the european fans welcomed Prince's eccentricity...and because of this, many european electronic artists were inspired by Prince...you can actually hear samples taken from many of Prince's albums on early rave tracks...Prince had an affect on many whether conscious or not, I would also consider his first band "The Revolution" to have a great impact on the sound of synth-pop, electro-funk, and Detroit techno.
