Brainchild of rapper and producer Olaf Jeglitza AKA O-Jay.
The story started around 1983 when O-Jay met Frank Hassas AKA Quickmix, a Berlin D.J. Together they released a couple of recordings under different names like "Wanna be a star" (Masterplan), "Action" (Alliance, The), "Come into my life - Rap" (Admirers, The) or "Keep on movin - Rap" (Rap IV Rap).
In 1989 they released a rap cover of the Technotronic classic "Pump up the Jam", under the name M.C. Sar & The Real McCoy. It was their first big hit. They jumped on position 16 on the German top 75 billboard charts (nowadays Top 100).
"M.C. Sar." is a pun based around the 'M.C.' appelation (Master of Ceremony) and Caesar (the Roman emperor). There was no person called M.C. Sar. O-Jay added in "& The Real McCoy" as kind of a gimmick, since the recorded vocals (by O-Jay) were mimed in the videos by "Shampro".
In 1990, their second single "It's On You" was released and contributed to expand their success in Europe.
In 1993, a demo called "Another Night" was produced with vocals by Karin Kasar. In spite bad reactions around them concerning the possible success of the track, they decided to pull through. The Berman Brothers were asked to remix the track, keeping the vocals of Karin Kasar into the final product.
The record company, concerned about the Milli Vanilli syndrome, decided to remove "Shampro" and bring the real male vocalist, O-Jay, into the game.
However, Patricia "Patzy" Peterson was chosen to lipsync Karin Kasar's parts on stage and in the videos.
The instant success of the track in Europe (summer 1993) and in Canada (fall 1993) ultimately led the act into the US market, where they changed their name to simply Real McCoy.
The American release of their first album "Another Night" (a restructured version of "Space Invaders" released in Europe) proved to be very successful: it went double platinum 2 months after it was released under the Arista record label. The following singles "Run Away", "Come And Get Your Love", "Automatic Lover" and "Ooh Boy" were all big chart topping hits.
The inclusion of Vanessa Mason in the act was mostly another way to cover up that Patricia "Patzy" Peterson did not sing any of the tracks included on "Another Night", neither did Vanessa at the time. However, it didn't prevent Real McCoy to win "Best New Artist" at the 1995 Billboard Music Awards.
Patricia "Patzy" Peterson left the band in 1996. She was replaced by Lisa Cork.
The second album of Real McCoy, "One More Time" was released in 1997, this time "lipsync free". But the success of Eurodance on the decline, it gained a lot less attention. "One More Time" was the last Real McCoy single to get signficant worldwide exposure reaching #1 on many local radio station charts but not replicating the same results on official nation-wide single charts. Real McCoy officially disbanded in 1998. The year after, an attempt to relaunch the act with new members proved unsuccessful. The "It's On You" re-release in 1999 featured O-Jay on vocals but not as a face in the video, he only made a cameo in some scenes reminiscent of the early days of the band.
After many problems regarding the rights of the name 'Real McCoy', O-Jay finally got his alias back and started to record new tracks, but this time as a solo artist. He contributed to the Polish single for the 51st Eurovision Song Contest 2006, in Athens and covered the 1991 LaTour club hit "People Are Still Having Sex".
