Mashing house, breakbeat, drum & bass, dub, hip hop, nu-jazz, and afro-latin grooves, Rhibosome are an organic cut and paste collage of live musicians, loops, sub-bass, funky breaks and heavy percussion grooves.
On stage, Rhibosome are three guys surrounded by a stack of samplers, drumkit, turntables, effects units and an arsenal of percussion with each band member moving freely between instruments and machines. All played fully live with no sequencing or Dat machines. Add their live sound engineer who mixes it all with extra effects and filtering, and you get a band that is very exciting live and very electronic.
“Rhibosome come out with a rich tapestry of beats to rival some Nu Yorican grooves”
– DJ magazine (UK).
The Rhibosome story began back in 1998 when two members began playing in a street theatre percussion group called Whak. Later that year they toured to festivals in Canada, Singapore and around Australia.
Once back from tour they set about their next project, to write a live electronic soundscape for urban circus company Bizircus. These songs soon morphed into their live set.
Since then Rhibosome have supported Coldcut, Rae & Christian, Faze Action, Norman Jay, Resin Dogs, Endorphin, Ashley Beedle, Jose Padilla, Adam Freeland, Wiseguys, Freestylers, Aphrodite, Ben Harper, Scratch Perverts. They have also left their mark on many of the bigger dance festivals.
Rhibosome have also done remixes for Aboriginal musician Richard Walley, Indian jazz percussionist Trilok Gurtu, rock band Jebediah and Zimbabwean group The African Music Congress.
