R. Villalobos

Real Name:
Ricardo Villalobos
Profile:
Villalobos was born in the capital of Chile, Santiago, in the year 1970. However, at the age of three he moved to Germany with his family after General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the socialist government of Salvador Allende in 1973.
This Chilean musician and deejay has become a key figure in the international arena and in Spain is already demanded by the best clubs and festivals (not known how many theaters have closed and his inseparable friend Richie Hawtin. Let us remember, the Festival Benicàssim International 2004 edition of Sonar 2006).

Although he has behind him a huge race, riddled with countless EPs and remixes, it is thanks to his first album released in April 2003 on the Playhouse label when you get a massive success: the famous Artichoke. Not only that but who is also served to popularize micro-house that I needed to tap needed to cross the borders of the club and get to the home hi-fi equipment. Their second album The au harem d'Archimede appears in 2004 under the seal of Zip, Perlon. Issues long and very tribal structures that served more as tools for DJs who like themed album per se.

Its growing reputation is the result of total dedication and connection to the public, which rises to the top with their discharge rate, a mixture of South American music in him, and electronic influences (Detroit, Chicago and its severe training as a deejay at the Frankfurt School). Prolific and tireless musician, record for top labels: Playhouse, Perlon, Ladomat, Force Inc. labels and countless more.

He works as a deejay in the best clubs in Germany: Omen (Frankfurt), E-Werk (Berlin), Ultraschall (Munich), Aufschwung (Kassel), Ostgut / Panoramabar (Berlin) ..., and is resident in Omen, The Box Frankfurt) and Kesselhouse (Frankfurt), as well as Cocoon night in Ibiza, together with Sven Väth and Richie Hawtin the already mentioned, among others, makes him an icon of the wildest night. Besides being present in halls and festivals worldwide, from the Mutek in Canada, Japan, South America, Mexico and even Thailand, to name just a few examples ...

And is that Richard rubs elbows with the best from the world stage. One of his latest ideas, Narod Niki, a group that has names like Daniel Bell, Isolee, Richie Hawtin Losoul or serves to return to the Sonar from the 2007 edition. Under the signature of Narod Niki find work performed between two artists 'unidentified' which makes jams onstage promptly let laptop without prior discussion between the artists. Thus we see a Richard musician, theoretician and ideologue of the music that is facing the most superficial, the kind that occasionally appears in photos and forums with the face and mouth dancing jacks.

Villalobos has it all to set up a great show! Attitude & vibe, great music - left da minimal tracks behind ages ago - now it's just the best of it all: house, deep, techno, acid... Last summer I played at a party in Valparaiso - Chile - same event where he played from 5 till 9 am - best time to hear to those really long & abstract tracks watchin' the sunrise on a bridge with the pacific ocean below yer feet!!!! WATTA NITE M8! After that a small ammount of ppl - 20 at the most - all sunday at a pool by the ocean with villalobos playin' at sunset again... can u imagine that??? He always has the vanguard in music - at least 6 months ahead of us all - what a way & attitude towards life - he shows that when spinning tracks . Being tall, a bit clumsy (specially at those after events!!!) low profile are just the perfect dressing for an incredible time! About someone saying he's a bad dj... he could've had some technical problems or have just been off his trolley... we have all been at some stage haven't we??? As Sushanti (one of his best friends in chile) says: wake up! I love you baby!

Ricardo Villalobos is a shaman, already a legend, a one-in-a-generation inspiring leader. His DJ skills are properly unbelievable (now thats what i call 'lost in the sound'!), his records are odysseys, his musical culture is extremely large (some may only link him to 'minimal', but he can play in fact ANYTHING as those who have enjoyed him dropping Lil Louis, funky techno or Reload in the middle of a minimal set can witness), his knowledge of complex rhythms and the way they act on the human body make him a kind of sorcerer. And he is also one of the most charismatic persons i've witnessed behind decks, with this trademark androgyn attitude making him one of the funniest and most fascinating DJs ever. Pure class, great man. A Ron Hardy or Larry Levan for the 2k era (spiritually if not strictly musically).

Going by some of the comments here it seems that Villalobos might like a drink or two behind the decks and unfortunately this seems to have tainted some people's view of him.

I have seen him twice now and I have to say that he's probably the best DJ i've seen play. The way he can play with the crowd is phenomenal - he can cut the bass out for long periods of time without you noticing and then when the kick comes back in.....

I just saw him last week at Womb in Tokyo with Richie Hawtin and was really looking forward to it. While his albums are interesting, I'm sorry to say Villalobos is hands down THE WORST DJ IVE EVER SEEN LIVE. He massively trainwrecked over 4 times and his tracks would blast in because he has no volume control. In fact, one time was so ridiculously bad that Richie Hawtin had to come over and push the fader to the next song!! Another time was so bad that he actually hit stop on the turntable, lifted the needle up and restarted the track... sad. His musical choice was mediocre and distorted because he couldnt control the volume levels.

For someone who gets paid thousands of dollars per gig, it was really startling to see what that money buys. Maybe he should be called "Superstar Dj Villalobos".

This is very sadly to say, but the older releases of Ricardo like 'Bosch', 'Say that you love me' or his remix of '2834' have much more groove like most ones of his current productions.

Wow, this guy is truly amazing... His music is one unique blend of subtle melodies and deep enigmatic beats. His DJ'ing style is something that i have never seen before, while being technicaly great he is one of those few DJs with a third ear of musical intuition. All in all this man is probably the best producer/DJ in the world at this point. A true genious.

Ricardo Villalobos is one of my favorite artists. His productions are so full of power that your feet just won't stop moving, and at the same time they're rich in content, sometimes deeply innocent, sometimes kind of evil, but they are always beautiful and precise, showing human soul as it is. He's also my favourite DJ and I look forward for every summer when he comes to Chile to check out his sets. I must say that after hours sets will always be the best, gorgeous music. Check him out when he plays with Luciano (Sense Club), another really great producer and DJ. Together, they are the best dj set or live act you'll ever see and hear.

I saw him in the amazing La Terrazza in Barcelona when he supported Sven Vaeth. He was out the back knocking out minimal house while astoundingly out of his box. He kept on knocking the needle off the record and laughing his head off. Stumbling 'round the place, disappearing for a few minutes every now and then and generally enjoying himself.

Having said that, his set was fantastic. Which is more than I can say for Sven - the big gurning lunactic.

when you see this guy at 10 o clock in the morning mentally levitating behind his decks, spinning the best minimal- and deep-house records you will ever get to hear, when you experience his weird wild-pitch-technique, you never know when the night ends. Maybe at midday, maybe the next morning...
