Roy Estrada was playing electric bass on the LA circuit in the 1960s. He was in "Roy Estrada & The Rocketeers" and "The Viscounts" and when drummer Jimmy Carl Black joined them they became "The Soul Giants". A residency at The Broadside club brought in singer Ray Collins.
When guitarist Ray Hunt left, Collins introduced his acquaintance Frank Zappa (who was then at PAL Studio in Cucamonga) to the band. When Estrada's founding partner Dave Coronado left, Zappa took over the band, which began to play his work. By the time PAL had become Studio Z the group's name had morphed, as on the 1964 release of Mothers Of Invention, The* - Freak Out! with the newly-signed Elliot Ingber. Zappa describes Estrada on the sleeve notes as "...an asthmatic Pachuco, good-natured excellent bass player, involved in the R&B scene here for about ten years. He is unbelievably tolerant".
Estrada left the band in 1969 to form Little Feat with Lowell George. The two performed together on "Ivan the Ice Cream Man", a record for grown-ups by Ivan Ulz. In the early '70s Estrada was a member of The Magic Band with Captain Beefheart, who gave him the persona Oréjon (Big-ears). He hooked up again with Zappa on the Zoot Allures tour in '76 and then on a number of Zappa works. In 2002 Estrada hooked up with 'The Grandmothers' tribute band, with Don Preston and Napoleon M. Brock.
