The ensemble evolved from the Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart that was founded 1946 for studio productions of the SWR radio to reinstate repertoire for the archives that were lost during the war. Directed by Marinus Voorberg (1975-81) they began to specialize in virtuoso choir music, the following leaders Klaus Martin Ziegler (1981–1986), Rupert Huber (1990–2000) and since 2003 Marcus Creed have focussed on modern a-cappella repertoire.
