Reviews & Discussion

Review by Crijevo Apr 20, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
Whether they called themselves after The Smiths' song or otherwise obtained the very name, Shakespear's Sister, despite sometimes being irritating and pretentious at Eurythmics/avantgarde-Bananarama attempts, delivered two fine albums and a bunch of singles not-at-all missing the point. Well, at least if you watch them musically, not by Siobhan Fahey/Marcella Detroit personal conflicts which spelled their end by mid 90s. 'Sacred Heart', the duo's debut album is an eclectic collection of songs varying between electro-pop and rockish/blues escapades of which songs like the opener 'Heroine', 'Run Silent, Run Deep' and 'Electric Moon' are absolutely fabulous. Sadly some of the other tracks obviously feel in the gaps - the title song 'Sacred Heart' as boring sentimental crap, a dull cover of Bob Marley's 'Could You Be Loved', the ridiculous 'Twist the Knife' or pointless 'Primitive Love'. Two of their singles, both with considerable charm - 'You're History' and 'Break My Heart' fared well in the charts and the hearts of the fans but made little to glorify the whole album. All in all, 'Sacred Heart' is at least a nice start (5.9/10) and serves a great deal to most of what 'came' with 'Hormonally Yours' (8.2/10) - an impressive alter-pop album with more sophisticated concept, ridden of its predecessor's lack of presentation. As trying out in their solo-careers so far, either dreadfully or respectfully, it is up to whomever they might be of interest.
