Born April 26, 1950 in Madras, Tamil Nadu, Shankar is a Tamil Indian violinist, a singer and a composer, brother to
L. Subramaniam.
In the 70s, with guitarist
John McLaughlin, he has created the fusion group Shakti.
His music is a mix between Indian Classical styles and Western musics. He has worked with a lot of famous musicians like Peter Gabriel, Yoko Ono, Bill Laswell, Talking Heads, Bruce Springsteen.
With British rock producer Caroline, he has founded the pop group The Epidemics.
He has recorded classical Indian music as well as several solo records.
