Profile:2009 is an odd time for house music's underground.

So perhaps it's fitting that two of that scene's champion oddballs, John Mork & Frankie J. Monacella (also known as The Sound Republic), have chosen to seek their separate fortunes after having released a slew of successful records - starting in 2005 - as a collaborative partnership, and as integral players in the so-called "second wave" of underground house music's New School/Boompty movement, also known by its biggest & most inaccurate misnomer: "Jackin' House" - along with contemporaries Joey Youngman, Bryan Jones, Chris Grant, and many others.

Even amidst the excitement, The Sound Republic clearly had found itself at the tail end of one of dance music's many upswings, and after just a few years the vinyl industry in America had nearly seized up completely (to date, TSR's SpatulaCity imprint remains one of the few underground house labels in the U.S. pressing vinyl), and by 2009, the freewheelin', fun, partycentric, and admittedly somewhat-superficial sound that had been a breath of fresh air just a few years earlier was now experiencing a serious backlash from fans and other jocks. This was almost certainly due in part to the many (low quality) imitators spawned by the irreverent and creative approach to sampling they championed, as well as the almost militant approach to having fun at all costs that both partners doggedly adhered to.

In the end, it became clear that both members had developed drastically different visions of how they intended to deal with the drastically changing scene, the apparent stagnation of the sound, and their ever-increasing differences of opinion on just what it was that The Sound Republic actually was, and, more importantly where it was (and was not) going in the future.

Citing creative differences, John and Frankie declared an "indefinite hiatus" for the group in early 2009, and to date both are actively pursuing solo projects and careers.
