Reviews & Discussion

Review by Astronica Mar 27, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
Stephen J. Kroos is a producer that seems to polarise opinions somewhat, but for those that enjoy his productions, one can only admire how he seamlessly synthesises elements from trance, techno and house into his work. Arguably his most well-known production so far is ‘Sadistick’, a dark, atmospheric yet driving tech-trancer that harnesses vocals from Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness with stunning results. Whilst this is a very strong production, other tracks are far more demonstrative of the Dutchman’s talents. Personal favourites from the ‘Tecktonick’ album include ‘Phantazmz’, a relentless, pumping banger of a track that incorporates some sublime glistening melodies at the points where it changes direction, and ‘Formalistick’, with its superb breakdown that paints some techy soundscapes before exploding into a feelgood, synth-dominated chorus. At a time when trance is becoming far more receptive to influences from other electronic dance music genres, this man is one of the very best at bringing some of them together.
