tobias. is Tobias Freund's 'house' project, like a german cousin to the UK 'lush-sounding afterhours megadeep house' collective around Trelik, Soul Capsule, Melchior Prod etc, still perhaps a tad techier and ruffer (we're in Berlin).
Apparently herr Freund is considered a sound guru in his city, with most of the local scene praising him and coming to him for production and sound advices. And it shows through his subtle, mainly smooth, balanced yet trippy and gently dark sound design, minimal yet very warm, soul-and-body-elevating without any patronising 'spiritual' aesthetic. This is modern, jackin yet sophisticated dance music with strong Chicago and Detroit roots. There is a dryer, ruffer Berlin element too, suitable for harsher, chemically intense moments at Berghain for instance, but in any case a general feel of carefully crafted, precisely chosen, smoothly brain-infiltrating textures prevails.
What we have here is an examplary case of not-so-productive but always original, strong and reliable house artisan, to be cherished.
