Profile:
Tony Humphries' name is synonymous to the early "New Jersey sound". As being exposed to The Loft and David Mancuso in the beginning, Tony has done a major contribution to the house music culture since then. He held court as resident for some time at the legendary Zanzibar Club in New Jersey. He did Kiss-FM NY for years spreading vibes across the nation to thousands of people, and soon after starting to lend a helping hand with productions for artist to many to mention.
He was also partly responsible for splitting the garage genre in half after he found out that "Closer Than Close" (performed by Rosie Gaines) was a Speed Garage anthem in England in the early 90's. He stopped playing the record in protest and therefore US Garage and UK Garage was born.
In 1998, Tony gave life to Yellorange where he released many garage classics for 5 solid years. He closed it down after the collapse of Strictly Rhythm.
There is no doubt that Tony Humphries has earned acknowledge and respect in the culture and is truly a house-hold legend. He also is known as the Godfather of the New Jersey sound to most.

With great technical skills and impeccable taste Tony Humphries became one of my favorite DJ's but for me he had his glory days as a DJ from late 70´s to the middle of 90's. A legend in the Dance music scene and not without reason, he's been around for a long time, from the early Disco days trough the birth of House music and he's still going strong. Started to DJ professionally 1975, in 1981 producer Shep Pettibone asked him for a mix-tape to be played on Shep's KISS-FM NY radio show and one year later Tony took over. Thanks to success with his radio show and DJing he got into music production. Although he never (What I know) released any record under his own name he had a helping hand in MANY classic Disco/House songs with artists like Chaka Khan, Mass Order, Indeep & Fresh Band. In 1998 he started the label Yellorange and released high quality Garage trax, classics such as Sunkids - Rescue Me, Soulswitch - Believe In Yourself & Crystal Clear - Live Your Life. Sadly the label closed in 2002 but rumors say that he has a new label on the way. I feel Humphries the most when I listen to his AMAZING mix-shows from the Zanzibar days. Actually most people think that Zanzibar was Tony's own club which is not true, the head was Larry Patterson and other DJ's like Tee Scott & Larry Levan also played there. Tony's DJing is the best when he uses the unique knowledge of Disco and early House, needless to say this guy got a LARGE record collection. I'm waiting for my GOD to rise again and guide the newer generations of house music lover. I know he will - todays soulless House needs you. Check his mixes out, they are available all over the web and feel the vibe created from this LEGEND!
