Reviews & Discussion

Review by enfantterrible Jul 10, 2010 (edited about 1 year ago)
Totenmond its one of the secret jewels from German Metal, not so popular and way much underrated they reside underground half way between Punk, Death Metal, Sludge, Industrial & Noise, a savage combination that has granted in each one of their works a solid concept and utterly powerful experiment. This is the kind of band that is heavy, way heavy in the good sense of the word, taking good care of the raw feel of punkish guitar chords with the fire riffs from death metal adding extremely elongated tempos raging with virulent sludge and sometimes industrial cadences. Dirty and heavy, their attitude its witty and untidy always dealing with uncommon perspectives on common topics from the scene, violence, drug addiction, psychopathologies and hate, most of the times seen from a philosophical way, not rhethorical but familiar, perhaps with the eye of a misanthrope citizen or a passionated nihilist watching the world from distance, impassive but utterly determined in his despise. Through the years they have evolved through different stages, first three albums showed a relentless shift of rhythms, low vs mid to high tempos with extremely addictive hooks and rhythms, virulent textures and harsh guitar distortion to the mid phase when they developed a more hectic sound, preserving the heaviness that characterize their route but taking off the emphasis on the noisy textures. The following set including the fabulous "Reich in rost" that its maybe their best album, using the logic of extreme metal in all sense of the word, heavy and rutilant to the parody of "Auf den mond in feuer" which is a set of remakes from classic German punk bands to the cannibalistically obscure "Unter knochen" Last efforts shows them in their more accesible construction, "TombergUrtod" & "Thronräuber" focusing more on Death metal structures and experimenting with dissimilar riffs to genre, putting effort on passing the virulent vibe from hardcore and perhaps a pint of punk between the extreme metal veil. Both albums are more epic and appeal to reach to a wider population with its appeal, epic and dynamic thus sacrificing part of the most daring character that defined them as one of the heaviest bands on earth.
