Village People

Profile:High camp disco troupe created by producer Jacques Morali in Greenwich Village, New York - hence the name. The original lead singer was Victor Willis (replaced by Ray Simpson at the end of 1979), and the rest of the group comprised David "Scar" Hodo (construction worker), Felipe Rose (Indian), Randy Jones (Cowboy), Glenn Hughes (leather man), Alex Briley (the GI), Jeff Olson (the Cowboy since 1980) and Mark Lee (member in the 80's)

it appears that around the time singer victor willis left or was removed, the village peoples management realized that everyone was in on the "gay" thing and decided to drop the double-entendres and playful intelligence for more earnestly pedestrian fare, culling vibes from such headily futuristic contemporaries as queen, styx and whoever did all the montage music for those plucky, DX7-scored comedies of the eighties (and maybe some devo, as well). with outmoded niceties like "camp" and "fun" expelled from their repertoire, the village peoples ensuing plod is a dismal display of musical ineptitude and dull literalism that you can shelve proudly alongside your playworn copies of the super bowl shuffle and that wwf album with koko b. ware singing "pile driver". the coy, sensual, "play" aspect of disco, as your parents knew it (o, yeesh), ended in 1981, when these has-beens dressed up like The Black Guy From Return of the Living Dead and recorded their last, unpublished twelve-inch, "i will blow you if you buy me a sandwich and let me take a shower back at your place" b/w "you know where you can put that? in my ass. no, seriously, in my ass" and "food fight (extended guitar solo mix)". no wonder I-Fs always so angry. i wonder what happened to victor willis (the cop). he was always my favorite...
