One of the most important figures in the development of reggae, Chin started in the business by stacking jukeboxes, later using excess and replaced records to open up his Randy's Records (the name coming from a US R'n'B radio show).
He soon started to record local artists, and was one of the first to promote a distinctly Jamaican sound first through Jamaican versions of R'n'B hits, and then through the new ska sound. He was an early mentor and producer of singers like
Alton Ellis,
Toots & The Maytals and
Lord Creator
In the 60s he also opened Randy's studios, a top of the range facility where all the big names recorded. Then in 1979, he closed the studio, moved to New York and with his wife Patricia opened the VP (the initials of Vincent and Patricia) record store and label. VP is now the biggest reggae label in the US
