Whifield

Real Name:
Larry Pignagnoli, Davide Riva, Annerly Gordon (Vocals), Sanni Charlotte Carlson (Model)
Profile:
Popular Eurodance act made up by Italian producers Larry Pignagnoli and Davide Riva. It briefly followed the end of Lalene.
Revealed with the instant success of "Saturday Night" in 1995. The vocalist for Whigfield was Annerley Gordon AKA Ann Lee. Lipsync was performed in the videos and on stage by a model called Sannie Carlson AKA Naan.
Born in 1967, Annerley Gordon started her musical career for Stock, Aitken & Waterman as a background vocalist. She later moved to Italia (1990) where she was hired by the label A.Beat-C Records (then owned by Giancarlo Pasquini). After a couple of unnoticed records, she used the alias Charme to work with DJ/Producer Francesco Bontempi AKA Lee Marrow. That single (later covered by Corona) was a success and led to more collaborations, and ultimately to the Whigfield project.
At the same time they were involved in Whigfield, Pignanoli & Riva were still pulling the strings behind the J.K. project, another notable lipsync act with Giovanna Bersola AKA Jenny B. and Sandra Chambers AKA Sandy on vocals.
Many attempts were made by the producers to cover up the lipsync scam over the years, even on the internet.
Ann Lee finally started a solo career in 1998 with the single "2 Times". Sannie Carlson recently got involved in some productions by Benassi Bros. and as Naan.

Reviews & Discussion

The Whigfield lipsync scam was discovered very soon. Sannie Carlson always lipsynced the vocal tracks of Annerley Gordon (even credited on the records). To my knowledge, Whigfield came 2 or 3 times in Montreal. I have heard that her show at club Dome ended abruptly: that people in the audience were screaming "Lipsync!". She showed her middle finger and quit the stage. A few months later, she "performed" "Big Time" (Summer Zone Remix) live at Square Phillips for the Mitsou television program "C'est Chaud". Basically, the CD was playing and she was just dancing to the music, mimicking the words.
Evasive in interviews, Sannie Carlson is still a very cultivated girl (she speaks something like 4 or 5 languages) and the marketing was easy partially because of that.
Those who still believe that Whigfield was not a scam should listen to some Ann Lee's records. A very popular one was the 1993 single "Try Me Out" by Lee Marrow, where she sings under the name of "Charme". The track was later covered by Corona (Sandra Chambers), another popular lipsync scam. Everybody agrees on the perfect similarity of the voice, and credits never lie.
Whigfield is another proof that, long after Milli Vanilli and Black Box, lipsync was a very popular formula in the 90's, especially in Eurodance.
