White Rose Transmission started in 1995 as a collaboration between Carlo van Putten (at that time vocalist of "The Convent", now the singer of "Dead Guitars") and Adrian Borland (frontman of english 80's cultband "The Sound").
The name is a combination of two different aspects. Carlo was very impressed when he first read the story of Hans and Sophie Scholl, two members of the german anti-nazi organisation "Die Weisse Rose" (The White Rose).
They dropped anti-nazi propaganda flyers at several universities in Germany during the second world war. Both were executed by the nazi's. That's how the first part of the name came about.
It was Adrian's idea to add the word 'Transmission'.
"We keep transmitting, hope you are receiving".
Until today WRT is a project consisting of a group of changing "Transmitters". Most participants are also busy with other activities and use WRT as an outlet for different ideas. Different artists have been active within WRT in the past.
Just to mention a couple:
Mark Burgess (The Chameleons),
Amanda Palmer (The Dresden Dolls),
Marty Willson-Piper (The Church).
Adrian suffered from depressions for quite some time. After having finished the recordings for the second WRT album, "700 Miles of Desert", he committed suicide on the 26th of april 1999.
Needless to say, this was a big loss for everybody who loved him. For WRT it meant the end of an era.
During 2003, Carlo met Rob Keijzer and they became friends. Although Rob had been playing guitar all his life, he was actually more a painter than a musician. Since the early 90's he is well known for the expositions of his abstract oil paintings. Carlo and Rob went to Spain together where they wrote the basis for most of the songs for a new WRT album, "Bewitched and Bewilderd", which was released in 2006.
This album sounds quite different from the two earlier WRT albums.... Carlo's gentle singing, his sensitive lyrics combined with Rob's subtle acoustic guitar playing, give this album a dreamy and melancholic atmosphere that will melt even the coldest of hearts!
During 2006 WRT played some gigs in Holland and Germany. The line up with Carlo and Rob was completed by Florian Bratmann on keyboards. Florian was also very busy with other projects, so for a new series of gigs during 2007, Rob and Carlo had to look for other musicians to help out. Soon after that Frank Weyzig joined them.
Frank and Rob knew each other from high school when they played music together. Contrary to Rob however, Frank has been a musician all his life and is well known for his time during the late 80's with dutch band "Clan of Xymox", and for his album releases in Germany with dutch band "Born for Bliss".
Frank was surprised when he was contacted by his old friend Rob after more than 30 years and heard of Rob's involvement in a project started by his all-time hero "Adrian Borland"! They started to rehearse with Carlo and together they did several WRT gigs in Germany.
Besides being a multi-instrumentalist, Frank is also an excellent producer and arranger of music. His home studio in Amsterdam served well for the trio to work together on new songs over a period of time in 2008.
After finishing the final mixdown at the Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum / The Netherlands, their new album, "Collector of Souls", is completed.
The album consists of 12 new songs, including the Adrian Borland song "Love is such a Foreign Land".
This song gives you a true Borland composition with Adrian's original vocals over Frank's superb arrangement.
