Born on 3 November 1983, Jan has always had an interest for danceable synthesizer music ever since the 4th grade. He grew up with artists like 2 Unlimited and the happy hardcore era in Holland.
Around the end of 1998, Jan fell in love with trance, listening to Van Diepen's Dance Department at the Dutch radio station 538. After Gouryella – Gouryella was spun, he know he wanted to hear more tracks like this and bought a compilation called “The Year of Trance 1998” and developed his taste to the bit harder melodic trance. Around the summer of 1999, Jan had bought a few more compilation CD’s with extended versions of club/trance tracks and wanted to give it a try (live) mixing, after experimenting some years on the computer. His dad, working at the theatre downtown, showed him pitch controlled CD players in their storage space. For the next couple of days, Jan was secretly practicing his mixing, bumping into some of his dad’s surprised colleagues… He enjoyed this mixing so much that he decided to go for his first pair of (belt drived) turntables and a simple mixer. But first, he went on vacation to Ireland and bought his first two vinyls in Dublin (DJ Tiesto – Theme from Norefjell and Paul van Dyk – For an angel, one of his favourites at that time). Returning to his hometown, DJ Tiesto’s record store, the Magik, had just opened its doors and it was just the right place for Jan to buy his other vinyl there.
These were also the years he became friends with classmate Paul Moelands and together they exchanged their own mixed compilation CD’s and passed it on to other classmates. After some years of practice with Magix Music Maker v2000 (ready for use samples…), the serious producing began. Through internet contacts, Jan got told about Fruity Loops and it’s freedom to create your own sound patterns and use some simple build-in synths. As Fruity Loops evolved, so did Jan’s producing skills. After working with only samples and no piano rolls to play whole chords, he learned about VST’s (software synths) and tweaking the knobs freely. It still took some years to reach a descent sound quality, but Jan always enjoyed producing new tracks as he learned from his experiences. In the meantime he bought new (direct drive) turntables, a better mixer and a new PC to increase his capacities. Still, most of the time went to producing and not spinning.
Jan extended his online contacts by joining sites like the forum www.trance.nu and free mp3 hosting sites for beginning artists like www.beatmaka.com and the former www.mp3.com. Around the summer of 2003, DJ’s like Misja Helsloot, Precision and Niklas Harding had added Jan’s tracks to their playlists. Giorgio Ponticelli’s “Subtraxx” show on Digitally Imported radio had aired several submitted tracks by that time. Thanks to the promoting by Niklas Harding, Jan signed his first track with the label
Afterglow Records from Plastic Angel, which was released in February 2004 (
Lunica / Nemo '03). He also participated in a remix contest for Solarstone vs. Scott Bond’s “Naked Angel” for Made In England Records and became a runner up, resulting in his second release (
Naked Angel (Disc 1)) and support by many big jocks as Armin van Buuren. Solarstone’s label
Deep Blue Records became a long term connection; Jan had remixed Bobina’s "
Lazy World", released in September 2004 and reaching a #3 notation at the Dutch IDP charts.
Starting from January 2005, Jan has his own monthly show called Retinal Insight on the new station www.ETN.FM. Switched his new alias,
Yanave, Jan is hoping for more success spinning wise and looking forward to the future with more interesting releases on its way on labels like
Deep Blue Records (
Amethyst EP),
Made In England (
Red Line Highway (Remixes)),
Spectrum Sounds (Yanave feat. Amphiby – Subjective/2nd Opinion) and a new digital sublabel of
Five AM(Yanave pres. Evanya – Las Perillas).
