Reviews & Discussion

Brock van Wey makes music which HE enjoys, which is the essential ingredient for an artist that will prevent them from slipping into insincerity. His music also has a purpose as a tool, in that it's designed to induce a meditative state. The titles (IMHO) are his own interpretations of the mental states / ideas that the sounds suggest to him. There is no grand theme outside of what it is to be human and alive (both immense and miniscule in the same moment).

Yes there are more exciting and more talented musicians and producers out there, but none of them do what bvdub does, and THAT is what makes him great. If you don't get it then for goodness sake listen to something else. There's plenty of choice. But if, like me, you were always finding new music but never quite being satisfied with it and needing to keep looking, there is a distinct possibility that you will listen to bvdub and think to yourself "I've been looking for this and I didn't even know it. This is exactly what I needed." The way that albums like The Art of Dying Alone, I Remember (Translations..) or White Clouds Drift On And On (as Brock van Wey) open up and reveal themselves on repeated listening are extremely rewarding, and highly recommended.

Bvdub - what a prolific producer. Strength In Solitude long player was the first album i got my hands on and fell in love with. Pass Through You, and All Traces Vanished wake some beautiful and nostalgic memories each time i hear them. That album really has a soul, and i still like to play it on late evenings while chilling in the garden. After that, next album i got was We Were The Sun. Already here style changed, less beats, more voices, less dub, more ambient. I liked that one too because his tracks can be really hypnotic and emotional if played in right mood. If not, it can be way too nostalgic, sad, and boring. And there we come to the point where he is now. He releases waaaaaaay too much music nowdays. Maybe its a personal thing, but i need some time for albums to grow on me, to connect with them on some level, to find out in what mood and time i feel like listening to them. Now, its 2012 and i see new album from him every other week. I think that only hard core Bvdub fans have the time to purchase and listen to his stuff, but i really cant. And its the point where quantity overshadows quality. Its not that its bad music, it sounds good, nicely produced, but his titles and atmospheres in 2011 and 2012 releases (from what ive heard on Youtube) sounds just too depressive for me. So, if he ever turns to music with beats i will gladly order and take a listen, give it a chance. But im so done with Bvdub's ambient. There is also one more good thing about him - collaborations and remixes he did are brilliant. ASC & Bvdub vinyl on auxiliary is bloody amazing, and epic remix of The Green Kingdoms 'Wetlands' is one of the most interesting tunes ive heard - he mixes ambient, dub and drum and bass in 13 minute long Bvdub madness. Im also looking forward to his new project East of Oceans, which has a scheduled vinyl on ASC's auxiliary symbol series.

Moanerman raves about Anthony Rother and to me all his albums sound the same. Pretty hypocritical if you ask me. Music is a matter of personal preference. I DO AGREE that bvdub is OVER-RATED in the sense that he is not deserving of the verbal spewage often seen on Discogs. His music is not rocket science and is often repetitive and sometimes annoying. But some of it I do like. My advice: if you don't like it, DON"T LISTEN TO IT. But please spare us the never-ending personal attacks on the guy and his music. If I were Brock I'd simply ignore you all, so you're probably wasting your breath and time.

Bvdub has never failed to impress me with his producing skills (and I mean, every release he puts out!) all his work is just out of this world. His music is perfect for times when you just wanna go outside, take a walk somewhere, reflect on your thought's/feeling's. the way his tracks build up can send anyone on a high. it's very therapeutic, I recommend him to anyone that wants to relax and find peace in the moment. to Simply put it, his work is like a healing potion for the soul, pure bliss!!

I really enjoy Bvdub's music. I first heard him on Kompakt's Pop Ambient 2010 a gorgeous 17 minute piece of music, it made me want to track down more of his cds and now I have quite a few more albums.
His music takes me to good places in my mind, places that I want to be and places that I like to be in, I live near the ocean in West Cornwall and find that Bvdub's music has an oceanic quality about it (if that's the right word) perfect to listen to on my headphones whilst sitting on the cliff top looking at the sea.

it's about time for me to give bvdub my review. there's been times where I've spent hours in my days searching his work, hundreds of dollars on his cds (the most paid $300.00 selected moments vol. 1 the most I've ever paid for a cd actually...) as it contains a bvdub track that's unavailable anywhere else... :( I've been on a constant mission to keep up with him the best I can, His music has affected me in ways that I've never been influenced before by any artist. sometimes releases pop up out of nowhere! every album and ever track he puts together blows my mind so much that I'm decided in framing all of his work on my wall with a gold or silver plague listing all the cds/lps up to date. to be able to come home and see it would inspire me more each day to make music. I've taken note of most if not all of the record labels he's worked on as well as a list of artists he's worked with. This man pulls me forward with his music and its helped me so much beyond words, like therapy. I can only just say what I've gone through to show how much I care about his music, I'm not writing to brag by all means, showing him my appreciation would be difficult as any wording or example. Bvdub has helped me during moments in my lifetime where I've been so low, so happy, during times of inspiration, many others. for most of his work to have no lyrics (so far) It's what I feel while I hear it, no other music has changed my perspective on what feelings I need to explore more of within myself. he's just amazing in my eye's, what can I say... If I ever had the chance to meet him, my heart would beat so fast, I wouldn't know what to do. brock van wey, if your reading this, thank you for the sounds, your my hero! I'll never stop listening. for anyone that's just now hearing these wonderful sounds or you've heard of him but haven't checked him out yet, listen to some of the albums put up on top of this page and post a comment here, maybe he'll read it :)

This is the most overrated ambient music artist, period. All albums sound exactly the same, think the worst and the most pointless 90s ambient. Take early Biosphere, add Thomas Koener's "Kaamos", subtract any sense of composition and musical piece development that the makers of those fantastic works had, and you will arrive to where Brock Van Wey is now, some fifteen years later. With album titles like "One Last Look At The Dying Sun" and "Songs For The Friend With The Silent Behind" Brock Van Wey establishes himself firmly in the electronic emo territory.

Judging from the labels that publish his stuff my guess is that his recognition comes mainly from the younger members of the dub techno community who have never heard older ambient works. Whether because of all the positive feedback from the kids or not, Brock's output has intensified in 2010/2011. One by one he rolls out his smarmy albums, indistinguishable from each other like gigantic blobs of grey mucus.

Nevertheless... there is one work of his you might want to get: Brock Van Wey - "White Clouds Drift On and On", out on echospace [detroit] label. It's a 2CD, and while the first CD is pathetic as usual, the second, titled "Intrusion Interpretations" contains Stephen Hitchell's reworks of Brock's originals. These reworks happen to make one of the best ambient dub techno records this decade.

Listening to his beautiful soundscapes always takes me to a good place. I couldn't help thinking how great it would be if he invited a vocalist such as Liz Frazer of the Cocteau Twins for a session...or even better Liz Fraser and Robin Guthrie. But I can't see that happening...dream on...
