Тату

Real Name:
Julia Volkova & Lena Katina
Profile:
The brainchild of manager/video director Ivan Shapovalov, t.A.T.u. is a Russian pop duo made up of Yulia Olegovna Volkova aka Julia Volkova (b. 20 February 1985) and Yelena Sergeyevna Katina aka Lena Katina (b. 4 October 1984). The name (Тату in Russian) mimicks the word "tattoo" and is pronounced tah-too; it originates from their custom to refuse to give away autographs, unless the autograph be tattooed on the fan's body.

From the start (in 2000) t.A.T.u. were a sensation in Russia, thanks to savvy packaging and snappy pop songs. Dressed in schoolgirl uniforms, the teenagers (Lena's the redhead, Julia's the brunette) appeared on stage and in public as sapphic lovers. Despite kissing each other every chance they got and being generally sassy, the duo denied being lesbians in interviews ("We just love each other"), which only served to bolster the rumors. The true nature of their relationship was part of the mystery and hype of the package, but they made the charts on the strength of catchy pop singles.

Their first album, 200 Po Vstriechnoy (200 km/h In The Wrong Lane) was a top hit in Russia in 2001. The videos and hit songs such as "Ya Soshla S Uma" ("All The Things She Said") and "Nas Ne Dagoniat" ("Not Gonna Get Us") brought them international popularity and an English-version release of their album in 2002, helping them make the leap from stars on MTV Russia to stars on MTV in the United States. Following the success of their first album and tour, they cast aside their manager and their lesbian façade and in 2005 released albums in English and Russian, Dangerous and Moving and Ludi Invalidi.

The new remixes are really good like White Robe (Beliy Plaschik)or 220 which is getting a lot air play on russian radio sure it may not be as poplar as All the Things She Said or the Kissing video that got them the famous how ever the electro pop or euro pop sound seems to fit them very well.I think it's like the old saying is true either you like them or you don't.I however like them they are not like the same old garbage you hear on the radio all the time.

The remixes are terrible too. Not because they're badly done, but because they've used the english spoken versions of the tracks. I'm not claiming to be and expert, especially since it's not my native language. But face it, if t.A.T.u. knew english, Jesus' second coming would be right around the corner.

t.A.T.u. has some great remixes, but finding them legally is another thing. Here are my favorites:

All the Things She Said (Extension 119 Club Mix)
Not Gonna Get Us (Blizzard Brothers Remix)
