Back Beat Records - Latin-jazz, acid-jazz, rock-jazz, vocal-jazz, fusion, swing, bebop, hard-bop & other jazz, soul, gospel-muziek, blues, rhythm & blues, new orleans, cajun & zydeco on LP/CD.
    address: Egelantierstraat 19

    1015 PT Amsterdam
    tel/fax: +31 (0)20 6271657
    e-mail: backbeat@xs4all.nl
    web: Back Beat website

Boudisque - Large store, carry just about everything (as long as it isn't jazz, classical or sung in Dutch). Good collection of techno & electronica (used to be better). Some UK import. Also specialised in ambient, "intelligent" techno et al. CDs (as well as world music, hip hop and the obscurest metal you ever might want to hear), and Hong Kong and manga & kiseki videos.
    address: Haringpakkerssteeg 10-18

    1012 LR Amsterdam
    tel: +31 (0)20 6232603
    fax: +31 (0)20 6206079
    e-mail: info@boudisque.nl
    web: Boudisque website

Concerto - Big store (actually several linked together), best known for their used CD & vinyl department, which is the largest in Amsterdam. They carry just about everything, and sometimes you can come up with original Kraftwerk pressings and stuff like that if you work your way through all the shit. Just keep browsing. In the other departments you'll find pop, rock, dance, metal, classical, blues, jazz, pretty much everything actually.
    address: Utrechtsestraat 60
    tel. +31 (0)20 6235228

Dance Tracks - Good store with loads of techno, trance and mellow club stuff, as well as soul, r&b & hip hop. You'll probably find a lot of the same stuff as in Boudisque and Rhythm Import (as can be expected with five specialised stores on one square kilometer), but they often have a lot of stuff from the US that others don't have.
    address: Nieuwe Nieuwstraat 69
    tel. +31 (0)20 6390853

Distortion - Your friendly neigbourhood low fi dealer. Small shop, loads of vinyl, especially 7"s, nice guys. Specialises in guitar bands no one's ever heard of, but does also keep a fast growing section of IDM, trip hop & jungle which contains cool stuff. They do their own UK import, and it shows.
    address: Westerstraat 72
    tel. +31 (0)20 6270004
Distortion web site with mail-order catalogue

Fat Beats - Specialised in hip hop, reggae, R&B and breaks. They're in the basement of the shop where Rhythm Import used to be.
    address: Singel 10
Fat Beats inernational distribution web site

Forever Changes - Large collection of second hand CDs, as well as loads of 7"s (behind the counter; ask when you're looking for something specific). Specialises in sixties, garage (guitar garage that is, not deep house or anything) and CD bargains in all styles.
    address: Bilderdijkstraat 148

Get Records - Large stock of indie, low fi, pop etc., as well as quite some techno & ambient CDs. Nice guys, nice shop.
    address: Utrechtsestraat 105
    tel. +31 (0)20 6223441

Groove Connection - Lot of goa trance and club techno, almost exclusively on vinyl. Haven't been there for a while.
    address: St. Nicolaasstraat 41

Independent Outlet - Hardcore & punk records, CDs, skateboards, streetwear, zines and comics.
    address: Vijzelstraat 77
    tel. +31(0)20 4212096
    fax +31(0)20 4212096
    Web site & catalogue

Killa Cuts - Small but good store, entirely devoted to drum & bass and trip-hop.
    address: Nieuwe Nieuwstraat 19D

Midtown - Used to be called "Blackbeat" when it still was Boudisque's dance music subsidary. Nowadays it's part of a Rotterdam (uh oh...) based chain of stores, specialised in gabba and hardcore, but they have a lot of cool techno & trance as well. There's a big cheapo department downstairs (mind your head).
    address: Nieuwendijk 104
    Midtown on-line

Outland Records - Downstairs techno & gabba, upstairs house and club. Haven't been there for a while either.
    address: Zeedijk 22
    tel. +31 (0)20 6387576
    fax +31 (0)20 6387199

De Plaatboef - Medium sized second hand store, mixed bag. address: Rozengracht 40
    1016 NC Amsterdam

    e-mail: plaatboef-amsterdam@hetnet.nl

De Platenkoning - ONLY (retro) GAMES!!!. address: Hasselaerssteeg 12
    1012 MB Amsterdam

Record Mania - Soul and funk, jazz, pop, rap, reggae, south-american, brazil, african, folk, soundtracks and classical music. Mostly vinyl. address: Ferdinand Bolstraat 30
    1072 LK Amsterdam
    tel: +31-(0)20-6209912
    fax: +31-(0)20-6723114
    web: Record Mania website

Record Palace - Second hand store opposite Paradiso (near Leidseplein). Specialised in sixties and seventies, but has a lot of more recent stuff as well. Mainly records, all second hand.
    address: Weteringschans 33

Rhythm Import - Three story shop; downstairs large collection of soul, r&b and hip hop, and jungle, trip hop and techno on the third floor. Great techno collection. Especially renown for their hip hop. The techno dept. is usually closed on Sudays.
    address: Nieuwe Nieuw straat ?

Rush Hour - Specialised in drum & bass, techno and house. Vinyl only. Carries all essential new releases, and maintains a great back catalogue. Seems to have a supplier unknown to most other shops, as it is the only Amsterdam shop that has a regular supply of stuff like Skam and Musik aus Strom, both old and new.
    address: Spuistraat 98
    Tel: +31-(0)20-4274505

Soul Food - I'm not much of a soul man myself, so I've never been inside, but it's supposed to be a specialist soul shop.
    address: Nieuwe Nieuwstraat 27C

A small update regarding Distortion Records. They moved to another address: Westerstraat 244 which is two hundred meters down the road from the old place.
  • elisel over 10 years ago

A 2nd update is that Dance Tracks and Rhythm Import are now in the same store. The former Dance Tracks store is closed.
I don't know the exact address of Rhythm Import, but it's indeed in Nieuwe Nieuwstraat.
  • distorientation over 10 years ago

I'm pretty sure Rush Hour carries a small stock of cd's as well, only underground stuff obv, and definiteley far fewer than records. If ur a cd only buyer, def worth a look anyway. Fame on the Kalverstraat sells vinyl too, or at least they did a while ago. Bigger more mainstream minded shop, Virginish, but carry some dance, techno, electro and trance as well.
  • elisel over 10 years ago

I know Rush Hour also sells CDs via their website, so I think they have a small collection as well in the store.

Fame indeed sells vinyl though it's not that much. The vinyl is not cheap. It's more a CD and DVD store where you can find all kinds of music and movies.
  • tom over 10 years ago

Pity you didn't have this with you when you showed us around, Eric ;)
  • BUNKERHEADZ over 10 years ago

@ All - this list was NOT compiled by me, I took it from somewhere else, just a copy/paste action ;)

I did change the info for Rhythm Import and Platenkoning. :)

But thx for the update for Distortion Elisel, forgot about that :(
and I also didn't know RI and DT merged..
  • BUNKERHEADZ over 10 years ago

@ Tom - Yeah, rubb it in once more, LOL! :)
  • distorientation over 10 years ago

Hm, a note saying where you got the info from would be nice for the person who did all the hard work then.

Forever Changes closed down a couple of months ago. Which is a pity, cause it was a pretty cool store. Found Mescalinum United's Into Mekong Center there for two euros, haha.
  • esteban_morientes over 10 years ago

Rush Hour is the place to be for me. Very kind staff, very knowledged, nice selection... Also second hand disco/funk/detroit house every now & then (you recieve the lists if you subscribe on their mailinglist).

midtown has moved their harder styles collection to the bassment about 2,5 years ago...i build it up with my colleagues (is this spelled correct? :s)

anyway.... upstairs is tech-house,t rance, techno (mostly minimal...but not everything)
also loads of cd's.... incl the cheaps ones

the bassment is called "the hardcore/hardstyle bassment" and they sell hardcore, hardstyle, speedcore, hardtechno and loads of cd's merchandising and ofcourse all the vinyl of the mentioned styles
if you really want to know something specific...ask for menno or sebastian ;)

nice info. i'll be coming to amsterdam in july during my dance valley visit. are there heaps of charity stores all over town too? like the red cross and similar. i always find good stuff at those stores over here in sweden.
  • elisel over 9 years ago

You could go to what we call 'Kringloopwinkels' where people bring their stuff which gets sold at low prices. You won't find a lot of eletronic stuff there.

A cool store is Mevius & Italiaander on Overtoom 21/25 near Leidseplein. You can find a lot of cool stuff at low prices. They also sell furniture but you have to walk to the back to find records and cds

This is an alphabetical list of record shops located in the center of Amsterdam (Updated may 1rst 2009).
I left out the big chains like Free Record Shop, as they are easy to find anyway and probably not of interest to anyone on Discogs. I kept in almost every shop (even some very mainstream and small) as long as it:
    * specializes in anything,
    * is outspoken about any part of their collection,
    * or if they do 2nd hand cd’s/vinyl.

Some of the descriptions below were copied from Bunkerheadz post (first one in the thread).
I also try to keep this list up to date. So if you know any changes, just post on this thread.

Shops mentioned in earlier posts, but not repeated in the list below, have closed in the last few years: Get Records, Boudisque, Plaatboef, Virgin Megastore, Dance Tracks, Rhythm Import.
    ---

    Absoluut Vinyl
    Waterloopleinmarkt
In front of the Stopera on the canal. Waterlooplein hosts a rather commercial flea-market, open every day, except sundays. This stand sells 2nd hand vinyl. This one is usually open for business. There are more stands selling records, but not all of them are regulars on the market.

    Amstel Antiques
Near Rembrandtplein on the Amstel 110.
This shop sells 2nd hand furniture and antiques. Also a lot of old vinyl; pop, rock, new wave, punk, soul, disco, jazz, etc. It's not possible to listen to the records as there are no turntables.

    Back Beat Records
    Egelantiersstraat 19
Small shop specializes in latin-jazz, acid-jazz, rock-jazz, vocal-jazz, fusion, swing, bebop, hard-bop & other jazz, soul, gospel-muziek, blues, rhythm & blues, new orleans, cajun & zydeco on LP/CD.

    Concerto
    Utrechtsestraat 52
Big store (actually several linked together), best known for their used CD & vinyl department, which is the largest in Amsterdam. They carry just about everything, and sometimes you can come up with original Kraftwerk pressings and stuff like that if you work your way through all the shit. Just keep browsing. In the other departments you'll find pop, rock, dance, metal, classical, blues, jazz, pretty much everything actually. Also a good DVD section (movies, some music).

    Discostars
    Haarlemmerdijk 89
2nd hand cd’s and vinyl. This one is a bit trashy. More a neighbourhood shop, really.

    Distortion Records
    Westerstraat 244
One of the best and nicest shops in Amsterdam. Very eclectic. Lots of records. Lots of different styles. Mainly vinyl. From guitar and electronics to the lastest releases in minimal techno, d&b, house, electro and dub-step. Usually very up to date, although it can be a bit messy, which means you sometimes really have to dig the crates to find records released more than a month ago.

    Eargasm
    Haarlemmerdijk 180
Small separate shop on the first floor of Most Wanted (Latin Music). 2nd hand vinyl: Soul, Jazz, Dance, New Wave, Pop, etc.

    FAME Music
    Kalverstraat 2
Huge shop which easily gets on your nerves. Quite a lot of techno, house and dance cd’s, but if you compare it to the many smaller specialized record shops in Amsterdam, you realize there’s really not much need to go here. Their DVD-stock is a bit more interesting (back of the basement, after the huge piles of dvd’s from US tv series).

    Fat Beats Amsterdam
    Singel 10
Specialised in hip hop, reggae, R&B and breaks. They're in the basement of the shop where Rhythm Import used to be.

    Flesch Records
    Noorderkerkstraat 16
2nd hand vinyl. Classical, Jazz, Soul, Beat... Only open at the end of the week (Thursday to Saturday) and on Mondays.

    Gigantic
    Sint Antoniesbreestraat 15
    Small shop with CD's.

    Groove Connection Record Store
    Sint Nicolaasstraat 41

Mevius & Italiaander were closed because they were in the process of moving when I wanted to visit the shop early January. I believe their new address is the Bosboom Toussaintstraat, perhaps someone can confirm that?

Correct > They had a paper on the window > we're moving to Bosboom Toussaintstraat.

That's where they came from in the first place.

    Hey Kengreen,

    That is brilliant.

Boudisque is closing. Not sure when, so keep it on the map for the moment. They're having sales at the moment.

Waterlooplein is not where you think it is. It's much more in the center.
Also missing a little shop on the Amstel 110 called Amstel Antiques.
Could be okay for anyone into Jazz.
  • funprox over 7 years ago

    Boudisque closes at March 29.
Their smaller shops in Utrecht and Nijmegen (dvd's only) will continue for the moment.

Get Records opens Sunday June 15th for the last time, more or less celebrating the event with a guest dj, drinks, etc. @ Utrechtsestraat 105.

Another shop probably closing down soon is Killa Cutz; Nieuwe Nieuwstraat 19. From Monday June 16th they're going to have sales.
Jungle, D&B, breakbeat, some disco, electro, etc. + minimal house / techno from Germany.

And jazz record store Blue Note (Gravenstraat 12, Amsterdam) also went out of business this month, but that's a shop where I've never been. So I can't give any details about that story.

Which shop would you reccomend for 1960's rock especially Dutch or German prints?
  • sptnk over 7 years ago

    @ hoteltravelfun

    Try these:

    Flesch Records
    Noorderkerkstraat 16
2nd hand vinyl. Only open at the end of the week (Thursday to Saturday) and on Mondays. Small shop, specialized in older records; Rock, Soul, Jazz, Avant Garde...

    Record Palace
    Weteringschans 33
2nd hand vinyl and a few cd’s. Opposite of Paradiso. Selling music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Nederbeat is a 'speciality of the house'. Also some Reggae, Dance, Soul / Funk, Jazz, etc.

    Record Mania
    Ferdinand Bolstraat 30
2nd hand vinyl: Rock, soul, funk, punk, many different styles.
Not sure if they have much from the sixties... But you could give it a try.

    And maybe this one:
    Amstel Antiques
Near Rembrandtplein on the Amstel 110.
This shop sells 2nd hand furniture and antiques. Also a lot of old vinyl; pop, rock, new wave, punk, soul, disco, jazz, etc. It's not possible to listen to the records as there are no turntables.

  • azzurro over 5 years ago

@Koie Are you in Holland now?

A lot of shops selling hardcore/gabber have closed down. Mid-Town in Rotterdam (and Eindhoven?) is one of the few that remained. You can also check housevinyl in Dordrecht.
Further Vip-Records in Sneek and Deeptrax in Leeuwarden (both all the way up in the north) have hardcore in stock.

    Mid-Town in Rotterdam (and Eindhoven?)

Wow, according to the site Mid-Town Eindhoven still exists. Who would have guessed that. even back in the late 90's there were never many people there. I usually went to Freaky Records, a few blocks away from Mid-Town Eindhoven.

    Anyway, back to Amsterdam ;)
  • knoeki over 5 years ago

Killa Cutz isn't closing down yet, as far as I know.

The shop is still in the same building as before, except that they moved the vinyl to the basement. The first floor is a bike rental shop (with some vinyl scattered around).

Second hand collections are added now and then, with some new tunes on occasion. There's a lot of nice things to be found there.

  • JRyall over 2 years ago

Fast list top-of-my-head, in no particular, order would include:
    -Waxwell,
    -Velvet,
    -Record Friend,
    -Second Life,
    -Independent Outlet,
    -Concerto,
    -Record Palace.

I'd say that's enough to keep you busy for a couple of days of hard digging and to inflict some serious damage to your wallet.

Did not really like Red Light Records. Rush Hour is not bad if you're into newer techno and the likes. You could find some wax at the Waterlooplein market too.
