"got this sad news in a email, along seeing this exact email on a bunch of other boards..just wanted to post it here as well This short message to tell you that I found out not 5 minutes ago that Mel is not doing well at all. I just spoke to Tom Moulton who just went to see him earlier today, and it would appear that he is now in the hospice, with only days or perhaps just hours to live, due to unknowingly having contracted full-blown AIDS, with lymphoma, pneumonia, all at the same time, which I guess (from what I was told) means that basically they cannot treat him in any usual manner, as it is just too far gone. Sorry, don’t have much more details, except that at this time he is still conscious, but cannot speak very much. From what Tom said, Mel’s doctor had told him that he didn’t need to get an AIDS test for the last few years, and this suddenly manifested itself with heavy weight loss during the Summer, and was diagnosed in late September, when it was already far too late to do anything about it. Not knowing if anyone has reached out to you about this, I am passing the information in case you may want to visit him. lets keep him in out thoughts and prayers" Mark_Anthony wrote:

Okay that doesn't need so many air quotes. It happens. longplayer wrote:

I doubt that the person who posted this would find anything fun about a man dying of AIDS if he'd had this virus affect his life in any degree. RIP. AIDS is such a waste. cuddles wrote:
what's even more of a waste is that HIV is a very treatable disease. why his doctor told him he didn't "need" a very simple, inexpensive test is rather perplexing. had the infection been diagnosed early enough he may not have died from it.

HIV/AIDS is treatable if one is in a first world country, yes. Though the stigma attached to the disease seems to be as primitive wherever one goes in the world.

true, but for the purposes of discussion in an electronic music forum, i suspect the terms "virus" and "disease" can be used interchangeably without illiciting too much confusion.

You don't contract AIDS, you contract HIV. If untreated, HIV develops into AIDS. The moral of the story is the same: 1) Use a condom 2) Go for tests on a regular basis so you can get treated earlier and to ensure you're not passing anything on. onelittle wrote:

When refering to HIV itself the term 'virus' is correct. When refering to the virus in a host, the term 'disease' is correct. No?

pedantically speaking, when referring to HIV itself the term 'virus' is already implied - "HIV virus" is tautology. Also, you cannot die of or from AIDS but instead of AIDS-related illnesses, whatever they end might up being.

Damn, this looks like it could be good… have you seen it? cuddles wrote:

No? if splitting hairs is your thing, you should technically refer to the virus in the host as infection - i.e, "HIV infection." "disease" refers to whatever symptoms the infection causes. hence, AIDS is a disease. i'm an epidemiologist, and the only 2 times i've known anyone to be so meticulous about this terminology was in my infectious diseases class, and here. make of that what you will. ringorider wrote:
