I thought maybe it's about time we started to post mixes from our old pirate radio tapes, to bring back that original old pirate radio & warehouse vibe of yesteryear. All mixes are welcome from throughout the 80s to 1993. All styles, but especially any shows on pirate radio from 1987-1992.

Preferably NOT taken from other old skool sites. Only shows, mixes which haven't already been featured or uploaded elswhere. In other words your own recordings from cassette etc please. Thanks! I've started the proceedings from a Fantasy FM show in 1989, converted from a tape. The mixing isn't all that to be honest & damn right sloppy at times, but it's all about the tunes at the end of the day. Also, there are cut-outs as I did edit out DJs talking, jingles etc at the time. I think the tracklist is ok, if I've left any out, please feel free to edit or point out. Thx & Enjoy :) Fantasy FM 1989 (Side A) Paradox - Jailbreak (House Tip) No Smoke - Koro Koro A Guy Called Gerald - Emotion Electric Sax - Don't Turn Your Back On Me (Deep House Mix) Two Without Hats - Try Yazz Sleazy D - I've Lost Control Jack Frost & The Circle Jerks - Cool & Dry Jolly Roger - Acid Man DJ Fast Eddie - Acid Thunder Adonis - No Way Back (Vocal Mix) Baby Ford - Oochy Koochy Phuture - Acid Trax DJ Fast Eddie - My Melody Fantasy FM 1989 (Side B) DJ Fast Eddie - My Melody M-Doc - It's Percussion DJ Fast Eddie - Hip House '89 DJ Fast Eddie - Let's Go (Original Mix) Roberta Flack - Uh Uh Ooh Ooh (Look Out) mix?? I don't think anyone needs to ask which mix I mean. Also, Sheffield had a pirate radio station also called Fantasy FM. When I was up there in 92/93 the mates I knew from there did a weekly spot. (DJ Ox and Mc Cunny) I was lucky enough to go and record the whole show with them, making billions of requests and answering all the phone calls from the listeners. I still have the tape of that as well. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh memories LOL. langster edited this message 3 months ago. TEKNONUTTER wrote:

Here's some mixes to start with from a big box of tapes that I recently unearthed from storage, and thought I had lost along the way! There's a couple of shows from Centreforce FM in 1989, one from Danielle & Rochelle, the other from Players Kenny. The play-list from the sisters is a bit more on the commercial side, but it does really show how the DJ's back then were a lot more open-minded than they are now...how many DJ's play house & hip-hop in a set nowadays? Well it was 1989, and the year for hip-house anyway! Luckily, I didn't edit out their voices on these two tapes (which I have done on most of my other ones), as that makes it more of a nostalgic experience, for me at least...those were mad, crazy days, the pirates being very much part of the rave scene...you can hear Kenny give out the phone number for one of the Energy raves ;-) Enjoy...more to follow shortly! Centreforce FM- Players Kenny (1989) http://www.mediafire.com/?5ytmyqneimm 1. DJ Herbie- A-tomico (??) 2. Dionne- Come Get My Lovin’ 3. Sueno Latino- Sueno Latino 4. Unknown- Feel That Beat (??) 5. Ralphi Rosario- Get Up, Get Out 6. Dionne- Move Groove 7. Ice Cream Tee- Let’s Work 8. The Maxx- The Party Is Over 9. It's not the radio shows I am bothered about, it's the 250 original hardcore/jungle/techno/house sets I have ranging from 1988-1994/5 and the 100 odd house/trance sets I have from 1995-2000 that I am bothered about converting :( Tkon wrote:
In my opinion though langster the radio shows were better than the sets, they usually had a better range of tunes and a lot of tunes you didnt hear anywhere else,i've about 1'000 sets from various clubs and raves and they mostly have the same tunes,so thanks again Teknonutter for starting this thread, should have done it myself lol Tkon wrote:

TkonIn my opinion though langster the radio shows were better than the sets, they usually had a better range of tunes and a lot of tunes you didnt hear anywhere else,i've Hmmmmmm, I don't find that with mine. Maybe though I prefer the tapes as I was at 90% of the events that I have tapes from and they bring back amazing memories for me, also the diversity of them helps. And I have pretty much completed or own my wantslist, there are only maybe two tunes I cannot name that I want to buy. Nah some of the progressive house and funky house stuff from 95-97 was amazing IMHO. It also signalled the real end of my clubbing life as I pretty much stopped going out to what I would call clubs in about 96/97. I liked the clubbing years after years of illegal parties and massive events of 40,000 idiots and mad club nights where the place was rammed beyond capacity. It was a refreshing change for me. I have only been to maybe 5 or 6 clubs in the last 10 years. langster edited this message 3 months ago. Tkon wrote:
langsterMaybe though I prefer the tapes as I was at 90% of the events that I have tapes from and they bring back amazing memories for me, Thats fair enough,i didnt live in England so i didnt go to the events but i did dj here in Dublin at the time and i still stand by my point about event tapes not being as diverse tunes wise as radio shows,i have tons of sets from all the big name djs and for most of them you cant tell the difference between one or the other, all the same predictable anthems and very rarely hear an obscure b side which tended to be the better tune langster wrote:
I would agree with the big name sets from big raves like Fantazia, Raindance, Dance Planet, Obsession etc, but the Universe sets were extremely diverse, especially when they started having about 20 different areas of music. But mainly I mean sets from local club nights, especially my local area of Plymouth. There were so many different promoters using either the Warehouse or Academy (the two main clubs) and they were in constant rivalry with each other but to the benefit of the ravers. They became extremely diverse with their styles, especially between 1990 and 1993. They each had more than one room and the styles varied immensly. I remember seeing Sasha in 1991 on the main stage followed by the mentalist hardcore nutter that is Chocci with Mr C in the second room playing mad techno followed by some acid house style dj. Honestly the diversity in the club sets from smaller local clubs, especially from the 88- 91/92 years is so diverse they are almost like radio sets in the way that they were always very experimental and definitely not pre-rehearsed or genre specific, and aside from the odd one or two tracks that pop up consitently, they are all amzingly different.

If so, I would love to hear them. I don't think that they were around too long, anyway definitely in 1990, and they were one of the first London pirates who consistently did amazing mixes...I think they even used 3 turntables, and certainly used effects boxes a lot for adding echoes to voice-overs etc. I remember the style was quite breakbeat and dubby, ie they used to play stuff like like Depth Charge, Renegade Soundwave, The Moody Boys, Bonesbreaks EP's etc etc. pramster wrote:

All tunes that man dropped are as hard as fuck - he must have had good contacts in Belgium :) Strange innit? Especially seesing as he plays it after talking about not knowing it... TEKNONUTTER wrote:
Lol! Exactly. Perhaps one of the other djs came in later & gave him it to play, or he had it but never knew what it was called. OrangeRiderAll tunes that man dropped are as hard as fuck - he must have had good contacts in Belgium :) Apparently, he was good mates with the Automation boys, & you know they produced some wicked stuff. I remember him playing a wicked set back to back with the Automation boys at the roller express. He did like his Belgian, Dutch, & German stuff back then. Kind of stayed away from the cheesier end in general. Together with Anton, Dizzie Dee (both on ChillinFM), Jesse Jay & a few others. Helium played on Chillin aswell before moving to Pulse in 91. PulseFM was born from ChillinFM btw. TEKNONUTTER edited this message 8 days ago. OrangeRider wrote:
ah, that does shed a bit of light... didn't know that - when did PulseFM all kick off then? The first time I heard it would have been September 1991. OrangeRider wrote:
Here is another one...DJ Stomp - Pulse Fm (17021992). Tracklisting as follows (any help with the gaps would be great)

Outlander - Vamp Apologies to one and all for all the "?" - the mix isn't that obscure - perhaps, next time I will use our friends over at tuneid.com :) Enjoy! jokinla wrote:
Ironic, you guys were just talking about Automation. That's your second tune, wicked wicked indeed. Automation- Ups and Downs.

OrangeRiderwhen did PulseFM all kick off then? The first time I heard it would have been September 1991. Around late summer ie late Aug as far as i'm aware, I remember listening to Helium & Anton on Chillin plugging their new, spin-off station around July/August 91. Although Nick Power who owned Music Power Records in Harringay & Ilford had something to do with it aswell, if I'm not mistaken. So you probably heard it very soon after it was launched. Blame - Music Takes You (War Mix) then Urban Shakedown - Some Justice around 30:00 = Escape From Brooklyn - The Rhythm (Mental Atmosphere) Then it sounds like mix of "Axe Corner - Tortuga" which I can't think of but might be a different track altogether? @around 43:00 it's X-E's - Vol. One - Rollercoaster (the one before Outlander "Vamp") OrangeRider wrote:
Gutted! I sold my Blue EP a couple of years back. Must replace, must replace!!! It rocked my world and got me into raving! thanks guys for the tune id's - much appreciated. Another couple of tapes will be ready for this weekend. AtomicCow wrote:
I think the track after "Sweet Harmony" on the DJ Helium mix is from the Oral B EP. But I am not sure.

Ok. So that track that I thought was on Oral B EP is not on that EP. My other hypothesis is that it's something on Strategy Records. Probably The Dreamaster, I should know, I have two copies but I haven't listened to it in a while so not sure.

Top man, top dj... terry123 what became of A-Z? I used to make a weekly pilgrimage up to London to record his show whilst "relaxing" in some London park. terry123 wrote:

you also had dj buzby too! but one of the best memmories was when FRANK DE WULF walked in the shop completely out of the blue with Jazzy M from vinyl zone bragging about the white label vinyl promo of CHIMES - ORBITAL that hed copied from a cassette tape! oh-zone records was owned by Jazzy M - now of Ministry of Sound! Nick Power and him were always in competition as to who had the better shop and the best cliental... all in good taste i must add! i was a paint sprayer at the time and painted his BMW for him(jazzy m) only coz he promised me a copy of the white promo press of CHIMES!... Frank de wulf came over to promote THE TAPE, a track he paid kenny ken heavily to play at the later warehouse rave that was called WONDERLAND in 1991! incidentally i knew kenny ken from old reggae sound system days alongside fabs and g-rider!.... caught up with kenny at WAX RECORDS ( i think..been along time now) in DALSTON 89-90 where he teased me coz he thought i fanceid DJ RAP from Fantasy FM..lol (actually - i did! hehe) but i think they had something goin on!( dont quote me on that..LOL) but getting back to what i was saying about kenny, he was more hardcore than techno and he specifically came to the shop to give me a copy of WILDTIMES REMIX - DERRICK MAY! 89!.... hows this for a starter of oldskool memms! lol i wasnt just on pulse fm - in 1984 was on SOLAR RADIO with DJ FOGGY who sadly passed away recently! i was more of a selector rather than a presenter!... great times i can tell ya! (time to get the kleenex out) lol TEKNONUTTER wrote:
What became of all of them for that matter? I saw nutty jim on another oldskool site somewhere about 5 years ago. No mention of Helium anywhere, DJ Sky was on Eruption 101.3 fm for awhile a few years back. Jinx, Helium, A-Z, Jaydee, Funky Junkie etc etc

Periodically pops in every now & then, hasn't been here for awhile though, nice chap. Damn, I used to listen to that aswell, but in my much younger electro, funk, hiphop days! R.I.P. & respect to the man aswell. |
