New York

I'm going to New York City in early November this year for a few days. Can anyone recommend a decent hotel to stay in, and what part of the city is best if you just want to hang around bars and get drunk with friends?

I stayed in the W in Union Square, it was alright. Lots of bars in Willimasburg from what I remember, liked it and the Village.

i stayed at this place:

http://www.hudsonhotel.com/

last summer it was 150usd per night for a double right before the forth of july

room was a postage stamp, but well thought out from a design standpoint.. clean and a bit "unique".. certainly "overly" trendy (i think a drink or two was included in the fee....)two minute walk from columbus circle and central park...

...but in comparison, it is hard pressed to find a cheap hotel that is clean and has a good location

where to go? my wife and i had a nice but pricey evening out in greenwich village.. around 200usd for fine dinner, bottle of wine, a bunch of potent cocktails and desert.

i gather lots of clubs are now located across the east river in brooklyn and such because of "urban" renewal... but i suppose this is best left to a new yorker to recommend..

I got back a couple of weeks ago.

You're looking to stay Greenwich/SoHo I'd say, maybe West Village, those are the "happening" places. Loads of bars and restaurants full of beautiful people

We were staying Midtown, near Times Square, and I would highly recommend NOT staying there. The area was like Piccadilly Circus x 10, and not in a good way. We spent a lot of our time in Soho, wish we'd stayed there; will do next time we go. Great city.

Never again: we walked pretty much everywhere, and the last 3 blocks to get to our hotel would take 10-15 minutes because of the volume of fucking idiot tourists. Hassled every two steps to go into a comedy club or take a coach ride.

Oh one tip: tip your barserver! A beer was around 6 dollars, and I tipped a dollar each time. Sounds steep, but when he brought my 4th drink up for free, it started to make sense. When I went back in there the next night, he had the beer ready for me before I'd sat down. Proper customer service.

I stayed at the Best Western on W32nd St. It was okay. Can't remember what we paid per night. The best thing about it was the rooftop bar, which gives excellent views of the Empire State Building across the street. We also arrived on the 17/11/01, which made things particulary interesting.

Anywhere in the 30s and 40s is pretty good for visitors.

Check out the Gamut on 102 E25th for eats, drinks, cool tunes and, if you're lucky, a trip to the lavs out the back with a straw taken from the bar in one hand and a little something tucked in the back of a book of matches in the other, which the nice gentleman in the corner may or may not have sold to you. Also, the Gamut's sister bar, the Gaslight is worth checking out for yet more naughty fun.

*EDIT*
Make sure you check out Grand Central and MOMA.

I stayed at the Gershwin Hotel on E 27th Street, when I was there. It was OK, in a good central location. It has various types of rooms, but was reasonably priced. TIM can attest to this. He kipped on the floor there one night. Apparently it's a favourite with up and coming models. They had a week long fashion event in the bar when I was there, too.

I'm going to check in with my NYC mates and get back to you on this one. You are attending a wedding right? Where exactly is it?

I'm going to my mates wedding in Rochester NY State. Going to head up to Niagra for a night before the wedding, and then onto New York City for 3 nights after the big day. True to form, I am looking forward to 3 days of intoxication in New York. No site seeing for me.

Any information you can get for me Bridget would be much appreciated. How are you anyway?

That is a average tip in the states.

You should always tip 20% for proper service.

I'm curious, how much was it per night to stay at the W? There's one in S.F. and I think it is really pricey.

About $700-$900 per night. Ridiculous.
Is the wife going? Makes all the difference as to where I'd recommend.

No, just myself and a couple of mates. No romance, just extreme drinking.
