What can we do!? Part 2

I've done some simple statistics. There is no deepness in it and remember that "250" posts doesn't have to mean "a lot of listeners".
I only publish threads with over 100 posts even if 50 posts and above also is good.

As new threads are posted the page numbers will move but the amount of posts is still correct.

So what does the statistics say?
We were active, we were fresh, we had fun and we listened to each other.
We made a thread like "Saturday stream, sign in" and peoples signed in. There were battles, there were 1 hour sets and 2 hour sets plus megasets and Play Watcha Likes and stuff.
We used also to post "On Air threads" in other forums here at Discogs too. It's just that sometimes (nowadays) it feels desperate when we post in other forums "in panic" when no one listens.;)

Now we have the summer ahead.
Surprisingly we've had a lot of listeners in the summertime. Just check the 12 threads page.
Unfortunately there is no statistics of how many but threads clearly shows it. (Even if some of us do multiposting.)

How can we gain listeners?
Well... As for now we are very few who streams. In fact there are only 2 DJ's at this point streaming frequently. That's sad. But hey, we all have a life to live. So don't expect many listeners as we ourselves are our only listeners at this point. So when 1, 2 or 3 is away it's hard to be the DJ.

Both Zyron and I sometimes use other media to gain listeners. Z uses MSN and I use my private myspace account and sms. I also chose carefully who I post. (I don't post a Techno stream link to a Country & Western lover.) If You want to have many listeners tell your friends - all of them! Use sms, myspace, facebook, instant messenger... Print some miniflyers and spread. Allways have a couple of flyers in your wallet, next to the gum. :)
Post in other forums. Not only at Discogs! But don't spam, it looks bad. Only spam your real friends. ;) I've done it all except the flyer thingy but I'm on it.
I'm convinced we will have more listeners if we do this, we just have to tell them where we are!
How about make the radiogs tune in address as part of your signature in your email?

======================================
As John F. Kennedy once said:
Don't ask what Discogs Radio can do for You.
Ask yourself what You can do for Discogs Radio!

======================================

These are all simple things to do and I think you also should do it. You do want more listeners?
When I do it I can have like 3-5 and even more non-Discogs users listening and that's a lot funnier than zero listeners.

Use ShoutBox so non Discogs users also starts to talk. Communicate! Say "hallo, where are you from" etc etc. Make them feel welcome and make them stay!
Also we should post more in the current thread. Because when we do it other forum users can see the recent activity and that it's a living thread and may get curious and log in.
Even if it's only One new listener it may be the difference between having 4 or 5 listener and That one bonus listener will get the DJ excited! :D
If we do just one or two of the above things we all will get excited! =)

Any thoughts?

Dunno if anyone click the links I've been posting for ages but if YOU post your links I would click'em.
My links shows something from Sweden like Swedish food, beer, Stockholm city, swedish amusment and stuff.

I would be thrilled if you also did! =)
An idea could be each name is followed by your favorite links. :)

While listening to the DJ we can watch pics, movies and web cams.
Please first check there's no Sound in the links. No music stuff is "allowed" because it would take attention from the music WE play. =O) Live webcams are always fun.
This may not increase the listener amount but may be something to discuss while listening. :) You do like to show your cool stuff, now show us your city, country, animal, car, whatever... But no porn, we need to keep this worksafe. (Familysafe) =)

I did a test a week ago.

The saturday when Storm and I played acid all day I posted 10-15 of my private myspace acid-friends with this message:

Click the href=http://www.radiogs.com/ >link and then click "Tune in!"

Get lost in your mind with the most awesome ACID stream ever on Discogs Radio.
2 DJ's, 2 Decks. Vinylmania-c (Swe) Vs. Stormbringer (Swe).

Click the href=http://www.radiogs.com/ >link and then click "Tune in!"

(Use the codes but change message if you want to.)

On friday (the day before the stream) I also sent out like 2 maybe 3 bulletins to all my myspace friends about the upcoming show. (Then people also have to look in the bulletin box and how many does That!?)

I also sent out bulletins like 3-4 times during the stream.
And then of course I posted in the Acid forum, but almost no one visit it nowadays...

This generated 11 listeners listening at the same time.

2 were Discogs Radio DJ's + 2 were not (BradR, MONK, kleez.one and kryb).
2 were confirmed myspace friends and the rest was unknown.

The listeners came and went by. We probably had more listeners than that. We did play for 9 1/2 hours and there can not be one listener who stays all stream long!
Ok, rene reiter did. :)

What however is odd is that only 2 Discogs DJ's tuned in.
If this means you guys don't like acid or it maybe only was strange coincidence I don't know. It WAS a daytime stream though! :)

What I wanna say is that if You post Your friends and tell'em to listen some of them will. You DO want people to listen don't you?
If you don't think the effort is worth it then don't. I can't force you! Maybe you like to play for 0 listeners? ;)

Without the messages maýbe only 4-5 would listen. I'm absolutely sure.

Finally...
What is remarkable is that at the time when we stopped we had 9 listeners and it dropped down to 2 when next DJ took over.
This must mean something. Most of the listeners we had came from myspace and they were there for the acid. The music, not the drug. And they listened, not in mute mode.

The test was not a success but I'm Very pleased. This can spread like rings on the water. Mouth to mouth. One mails a link to someone who mails to someone...
Maybe not today or tomorrow but someday...

=O)

Well, not everyone like the mix Techno/Funk.

I have another example, the other way around: When Storm and me played some Techno & Acid for was it 6 hours some weeks ago and you took over with some laid back summer music listeners also dropped - completely. I don't say your music was bad, I mean that when the style totally flip over people will leave because they were there for the first music played, what ever style it is.
Therefore, to keep listeners listening the DJ's should try to follow at least with a close style and as I see it Disco/Funk is way different from Techno/Trance.
It's like playing Classical music and suddenly change over to Pop, or r'n'b vs rock and so on.

yep..one wrong thing i also did yesterday..never continue show if you change style..so i did promote first two hour show as funk /disco ect..at first show was meant to be only two hour but then continued to play trance/techno (as i updated forum topic it was too late maybe for people to notice that)..maybe most listeners was only prepared to be listen that before informed part..so extra time was too much:)..but its time to learn lesson:)
posted about 1 year ago. ( permalink | report )
Ok, I don't think the extra time is the problem. As long as there's continious music people probably listen. If they have the time of course.
The "problem" is more the change of style. But then again - if you promote it's gonna be disco/funk/techno/trance people may be better prepared.
But I think the best way to keep listeners is to follow the style as close as possible.
Btw. My "Enter My Room" sets are various as hell and is for those who want to explore music. :)

A hell lot to read but important :)

In the past days mika and me were discussing setting up a new webradio. we need your thoughts about it to clearify what to do about the low ammount of listeners.

here's the situation:

streams are spontaneous what makes it hard for people to know about a DJ being on air, esp. now while discogs is dying

our streams are more less impressive. it's nice to have a radio where you can stream what you want but to be honest, who wants to listen to that? on the new radio we imagine we would still stream spontaniously but:

DJ shows: a good idea to get steady listeners may be if the DJ's have their own regular shows just like the french friends from lazertown on thursdays. after 2 weeks I realized it's regular and thought: "oh it's thursday, sam_lowry is on air tonight". i think you get the point. so just imagine me on air every second sunday for 2 hours and now mika taking the other 2 sundays of the month. we would already be on air every sunday at a certain time. the new website we could integrate a calendar function just for this so it's easy to check scheduled shows. dunno how yet but every DJ would be able to edit it for adding the upcoming shows and cancelling shows where he knows he can't play.

website software: atm i'm in favour to install mediawiki. i already run another website using it and i work daily on it so setting things up wouldn't require too much effort and help search for me. so much at least: the shoubox can easily be integrated again with past posts.

being legal: i would pay fees to the german music industry to be on air completely legally. the price is rediculous! 30€ per month at least for 9 channels available via 3 URLs to less than 2700 unique listeners per month. price will be reduced if we can tell a max ammount of hours on air per week. anyway, being legal it is easier for each DJ to promote himself and the station/website. btw: paying that fee doesn't include downloads so we couldn't offer downloads on the website at all and i would include to the disclaimer that no user is allowed to add links to his sets on the site and would be forced to control that it doesn't happen (what doesn't stop you to do so on any other website).

discogs: combined with that we decided it's better to get rid of the name "Discogs Radio". i guess you all know the old story that we're not allowed to use this phrase outside the forums what made it always hard to promote ourself in the web.

filling gaps: we also talked about filling gaps when no DJ is on air with single tracks or other sets than ours. but that is far future music and has advantages and disadvantages.

open questions:

should we stop wasting our time and keep everything as is?

should we just change the design of radiogs.com?

should we change the radio station name and what should the new name and domain name be? btw: *.fm domains are expensive. nonetheless the domain name should be found quickly so i can start coding. the name should be catchy and suggest "old school underground open mindeness" or sth like that :)

please post your thoughts! thanks :)

If we change name it should be something easy to remember and easy to pronounce.
"Discogs" isn't as simple as that for people to spell. When you say the name they say "Disc-what?"
It should be more... easy, a word, a name people remember.

Filling gaps has to be discussed....
Not offering online downloads from the website is not really relevant as they can be ripped by us as it has already been done before.
Scheduling djs is a good idea. Though the regular basis of it is not that obvious. ie. i am on holidays and cannot air anything.

we came to the conclusion that ...Jack... is the word to go for. it's old school and has no negative associations.

.fm domains cost $98/year so if anyone wants to sponsor us...

so here some variations with properly checked free domains (check in browser is not accurate). first checked com, then net, then org. so if it's org, then com and net were taken already. .fm is the last chance but expensive.
The station name can differ from the domain but would be uncool

Jack FM on ? all taken even Jack.fm.

monkey, i think the association with this site needs to be terminated altogether at some point. migration of the forum functions to another site (when it goes live) seems to me to be a nice way to dovetail with ddb, and perhaps provide some draw to it. just my thoughts, as coming to ogs is now becoming infrequent for me, and likely also for a significant segment of potential listeners.

again, i will kick in some funds for the domain if necessary. between the regular radiogs streamers, we can make the individual contributions trivial.

i personally want as little as possible to do with discogs anymore...

the name says it all. and we have so little chance of growing a listener base here. the forums are dying (or more to the point, nik and kevin are killing them). and it is difficult to advertise whilst associated with this site, as we can't use the discogs name. however, there is an alternative db site in the works that we can freely associate ourselves with, promote, etc...many of the things we are unable to do here.

discogs is an embarrasement. it is wikiogs now. let's cut our losses.

yep that's what the new radio name and site thingy here is all about. get rid of "Discogs Radio" so we can promote the new name properly with an own domain. besides the fact that "radiogs" is saying nothing without Discogs behind it, it's unspeakable and ugly as a station name.

JackNChill: I 100% dislike the name. we also play disco sometimes. JackNDisco? C'mon ;)
Again: The station name doesn't need to define / describe the music we play. Just take Proton Radio, Pirate Revival. The names say nothing about the music but are catchy enough to remember.
We should choose the new name very wisely, not like we did with radiogs within 4 replies.

I'm in favour with Jack FM on some different domain like jacking.it / jackin.it or jackthebox.net

Jack is party, jack is music.

As Mon-k said to me:

Jack is just an association to old school dance scene. i think it fits perfectly. once people see the schedule with e.g. minimal in it they realize it's not only old school. no need to fuck up the name for the clearification.

"Who is Jack, and what is it that Jack does?"

Jack is the one who gives you the power to jack your body!
Jack is the one who gives you the power to do the snake.
Jack is the one who gives you the key to the wiggly worm.
Jack is the one who learns you how to walk your body.
Jack is the one that can bring nations and nations of all Jackers together under one house.
You may be black, you may be white; you may be Jew or Gentile. It don't make a difference in OUR House.
And this is fresh.

of course the site will not make any association to old school only and chicago thingy. just a "normal" webradio site. but people associate good things with the term "jack". and once a new visitor sees what is going on on the site it's clear.

On a side note, FM stands for frequency modulation (UKW for the germans) and describes the technique used to transmit high quality stereo audio through the air. Technically speaking, an internet radio is all but FM, Jack TCP/IP would be a more fitting name.

But, Jack FM really does sound better. And I do like jacking.it.

BTW, I still own omatapete.de (granny's wallpaper) which contains a long dead blog.

You can just say, you want me to play. ATM, I am very busy with different things, but I can already see a light at the end of the tunnel.

omatapete :D rocks like augenkrebs.de

yes i discussed with mika about the FM thingy and even said the name should be Radio not FM, but as you also noted Jack FM sounds better than Jack Radio.

on the other hand since Jack sounds old school, so does FM.

the best station name ever is WBMX... WJACK? ;)

IIRC, the american system of naming radio stations, uses four letter codes. Those stations beginning with a W are located east of the Mississippi, those in the west start with a K. Hmmm, WJCK seams appropriate...

Enough being a smart ass, I seriously do like Jack FM.

Axel: Thanks for trying ;)

ok what domain? best would still be to have a jackfm.* but the most common ones are taken. even some with the worse solution jack-fm.* the only free i see is jack-fm.net

these popped into my mind:
diggin.*
collectors.*
(*= tld preferably fm)
jacknation.*
then i googled and noticed http://www.925jackfm.com/ they _are_ jack fm and happen to have something called jack nation. all those urls seem to be available with .fm tld...
we up north might even like scandinavian.fm... ;)
EDIT: Qpchan has got point - this jack-thing's a bit too housey since not every dj is pushing house. even something like recordjunkiez would be more appropriate

FM domains cost $98 a year. com domains cost €10 a year. I won't pay $98 a year for a domain, that's for sure. already have to pay 30€ per month for the legal fee to the german music industry (server is in germany).

i agree that Jack maybe has a primary House association.
ok not bad, it was at least a good try. let's stick our heads together. easiest will be a name that is short, catchy, easy to speak/understand/write and doesn't include any dead words like House, Disco, Techno, Undergound, DJ, vinyl, club, groove, bounce, ultra, hyper, you get it etc.

Jelly or Juicy Radio is a good example of what i mean.

what i can also think of is
- female names: Maya FM
- universe: Saturn Radio (good word but hard to speak/understand) / Mars FM / Radio Mars. Galaxy FM is taken ;)
- parts of a turntable / mixer
- words that don't exist

yes, I also do but since we're gonna relaunch we want to start all over again and besides: Radiogs is hard to understand.

-Hey! I'm playing at radiogs.com tonight
-Say what?
-Radiogs.com!
-radiowhat?
-radiogs.com
-radiocs.com?
-No radio G S.com
-radiojeeEss?
-Never mind... Fuck off!
